Who can make the CFP in each Power 5 Conference? (Post Week 12 Installment)

A few weeks ago I did this very post. Now, let’s see who is left in the race to land a college football playoff spot from each power five spot.

ACC
Clemson (11-0)
Since the scare against North Carolina, the ACC’s only hope to make the CFP once again has not looked back, destroying all of their opponents since, including a 52-3 drubbing of now seven and three Wake Forest. All Clemson has to do now is beat South Carolina following a bye next Saturday, and beat the ACC’s Coastal winner in Charlotte to make the CFP.

Big 12
Oklahoma (9-1)
Oklahoma came back from being down 28-3 to then undefeated Baylor to beat the Bears 34-31 in the final two minutes. Oklahoma has to get some help, though, from other conference champions and hope that one of them has two losses.

Baylor (9-1)
Baylor’s undefeated season ended at the hands of a loss to Oklahoma. Now, they have to beat both Texas and Kansas, then they have to beat Oklahoma in a rematch. Like, Oklahoma, they would have to get some help.

Big Ten
Ohio State (10-0)
Ohio State just has to win and they’re in.

Penn State (9-1)
Penn State has a golden opportunity to prove to the committee that they’re worthy of a spot with a showdown against Ohio State next Saturday. A win there would put them in the prime position to win the Big Ten East and put them in the Big Ten Championship for a rematch versus Minnesota, who would be there only loss.

Minnesota (9-1)
Minnesota’s undefeated season ended in Kinnick Stadium versus Iowa yesterday. If they win out they will be in the Big Ten Championship. A win there would almost definitely put them in the CFP.

Pac-12
Oregon (9-1)
Winning out, inculding a Pac-12 championship, will put the ducks in the best position to get into the CFP.

Utah (9-1)
Like Oregon, winning out, inculding a Pac-12 championship, will put the ducks in the best position to get into the CFP.

SEC
LSU (10-0)
A win over Alabama proved that LSU was CFP ready. To finish the season, they play rivals Arkansas and Texas A&M. Struggling Arkansas won’t be a challenge. But something tells me Texas A&M won’t be easy for LSU. Even if LSU loses one of these games, winning in Atlanta should put them back into the CFP.

Georgia (9-1)
After defeating Auburn, Georgia has locked up the SEC East for the third consecutive season. Georgia plays host to Texas A&M and plays Georgia Tech. Georgia has to win both plus the SEC Championship to get into the CFP.

Alabama (9-1)
A loss to LSU a week ago plus losing QB Tua Tagovailoa for the season yesterday for the season means that Alabama will need some help to get into the CFP this season. Backup QB Mac Jones should have no problems with Western Carolina next week, but a trip to Jourdan-Hare will not be easy. Something tells me Alabama will not be in the CFP for the first time ever in 2019.

cbhsports College Football Week 12 Preview

Top 6 entering Week 12 (My rankings)
1.LSU 8-0 (5-0) Next Week:at.Ole Miss
2.Ohio State 9-0 (6-0) Next Week:at.Rutgers
3.Clemson 10-0 (7-0) Next Week:Wake Forest
4.Alabama 8-1 (5-1) Next Week:at.Mississippi State
Outside Looking In
5.Georgia 8-1 (5-1) Next Week:at.Auburn
6.Oregon 8-1 (6-0) Next Week:Arizona

Games that will impact CFP in Week 12 (Rankings are from CFP Poll)
5.Alabama at. Mississipi State
Alabama has to win to have a chance at returning to the College Football Playoff. I expect Nick Saban’s team to fire on all cylinders in Starkville and give Mississippi State no chance entering the fourth quarter. Prediction:Alabama 49, Mississippi State 17

2.Ohio State at. Rutgers
Ohio State showed a week ago versus Maryland that there was going to be no problem for them without star Defensive End Chase Young. With Young only suspeneded one game more for NCAA elgibility issues, Ohio State should easily beat Rutgers. Prediction:Ohio State 56, Rutgers 10

Wake Forest at. 3.Clemson
Wrapping up the ACC Atlantic just means for a bigger target on Clemson’s back. A tough challenge for Clemson just means that Clemson should play better. I have Clemson winning a tough game versus the Demon Deacons. Prediction:Clemson 38, Wake Forest 27

4.Georgia at. 12.Auburn
QB Jake Fromm and Georgia have had trouble with Auburn on the plains in the past, but Georgia has to win to stay in the playoff race. Georgia wins in an ugly game. Prediction:Georgia 16, Auburn 9

8.Minnesota at. 20.Iowa
Iowa has been eliminated from the Big Ten West picture but a game at home versus the division leaders means for a great game. I think Iowa has a first half lead but PJ Fleck’s Golden Gophers make a comeback to win. Prediction:Minnesota 33, Iowa 28

1.LSU at. Ole Miss
After LSU’s glorius win over then number three ranked Alabama, they will have to keep winning to stay in the driver’s seat in the SEC West. LSU wins and they don’t have much trouble doing it. Prediction:LSU 49, Ole Miss 24

10.Oklahoma at. 13.Baylor
Whoever wins this game will be in the driver’s seat in the Big 12 and the most likely to land a playoff spot. Despite Oklahoma’s loss, I have them beating Baylor. Prediction:Oklahoma 38, Baylor 17

1.LSU 7-0 (4-0) Next Week:at.Alabama

5.Clemson 9-0 (6-0) Next Week:at.NC State
6.Georgia 7-1 (4-1) Next Week:Missouri

Games that will impact CFP in Week 10 (Rankings are from CFP Poll)
Maryland at. 1.Ohio State
Maryland challenged Ohio State a year ago but came up just short. This, much improved Buckeyes team should not have any problems with the Terps this season. Prediction:Ohio State 45, Maryland 21

4.Penn State at. 17.Minnesota
While both teams are undefeated, Minnesota’s non-conference schedule has meant that this will be the Golden Gophers’s first real test this season. Penn State needs another big win and I think they get a hard fought win in Minnesota. Prediction:Penn State 28, Minnesota 24

2.LSU at. 3.Alabama
While LSU and Alabama are ranked 1-2 in the AP Poll, they were not ranked 1-2 in the first College Football Playoff poll. Still, we might get the best match up of the season if Tua Tagovailoa is at full strength for Alabama. If Tua’s at full strength, Alabama wins at home in shootout. Alabama 56, LSU 52

Missouri at. 6.Georgia
Georgia will have to get through another test versus Kelly Brytant and Missouri. While it should be close early, I expect Georgia to roll at home. Prediction:Georgia 31, Missouri 21

5.Clemson at. NC State
The way Clemson has been winning, I struggled to put this game on the list, but just remember the game versus North Carolina. Prediction:Clemson 45, NC State 24

Iowa State at. 9.Oklahoma
Oklahoma has another test at home versus Iowa State. With their loss to Kansas State, they cannot lose a game or will not be in the CFP. Jalen Hurts should dominate in a shootout win over Iowa State. Prediction:Oklahoma 38, Iowa State 34

These college basketball conference previews will go into the season a little bit (sorry about that) but the games being played now are mostly unimportant and won’t matter when we get to March. 6.Oklahoma 7-1 (4-1) Next Week:Bye

Games that will impact CFP in Week 10 (Rankings are from AP Poll)

10.Georgia vs. 7.Florida (Jacksonville,FL)
The primetime SEC-CBS matchup has recently been scheduled to be played and to continue to be played in Jacksonville through 2023. Florida has not been successful versus Georgia recently and I think that struggle continues. I believe that Georgia QB Jake Fromm will shake off his struggles after coming off a bye week and lead Georgia to a win and the control of the SEC East. Prediction:Georgia 38, Florida 34

16.SMU at. Memphis
SMU is back and Memphis is right behind them. This game will likely determine the American Athletic west and who can get the lone group of five spot in the new year’s six bowl games. Prediction:Memphis 31, SMU 27

cbhsports College Football Week 9 Preview

Top 6 entering Week 9 (My rankings)
1.LSU 7-0 (3-0) Next Week:LSU
2.Alabama 7-0 (4-0) Next Week:Arkansas
3.Ohio State 7-0 (4-0) Next Week:Wisconsin
4.Oklahoma 7-0 (4-0) Next Week:at.Kansas State

5.Clemson 7-0 (5-0) Next Week:Boston College
6.Penn State 7-0 (4-0) Next Week:at.Michigan State

Games that will impact CFP in Week 9 (Rankings are from AP Poll)

I don’t see Alabama, Oklahoma, or Clemson losing their games this week so they won’t be listed here.

13.Wisconsin at. 3.Ohio State
If Wisconsin loses they are unofficially knocked out of contention for the playoff. If this game was in Madison, I might pick the badgers but the way Ohio State has been playing at home with Georgia bounceback Justin Fields at QB, JK Dobbins at running back, and a stingy defense I don’t see a way OSU loses. Prediction:Ohio State 45, Wisconsin 28

9.Auburn at. 2.LSU
LSU has been on fire and that’s all you really have to say about that. Auburn is coming off a drubbing of bottom-dweller Arkansas and if they keep that offensive firepower going, this game could be a shootout. Prediction:LSU 38, Auburn 34

6.Penn State at. Michigan State
Penn State will go on the road to a hostile environment in East Lansing but I don’t expect the nittany lions to have many problems with the Spartans. Prediction:Penn State 31, Michigan State 14

8.Notre Dame at. 19.Michigan
After losing to Penn State a week ago, Michiga, unless craziness happens, is out of the race. But, Michigan can eliminate the independent Irish from a second year in a row trip to the CFP by knocking them off in Ann Arbor. Prediction:Michigan 17, Notre Dame 14

Who can make the CFP in each Power 5 Conference?

Today, we are going to be going over each power five conference’s teams with a chance to make the college football playoff this season.

ACC
4.Clemson (7-0)
How they can make the playoff:Just don’t lose. Clemson hasn’t looked like the team that we thought they were but if they win out they should very well be in the playoff.

Big 12
5.Oklahoma (7-0)
How they can make the playoff:After getting past Texas a week ago, they only have one more test. The Sooners have Baylor and if they can get past Matt Rhule’s team they should have no problem getting into the playoff.

14.Baylor (7-0)
How they can make the playoff:Beating Oklahoma has to be what Baylor does to make a national statement and get into the top ten to have a chance to get into the CFP.

Big Ten
3.Ohio State (7-0)
How they can make the playoff:With how dominant the Buckeyes have been, I don’t see anything put green grass for Ohio State’s playoff chances. Penn State may be a challenge for this team, but the way it’s looking is Ohio State will be in the playoff.

6.Penn State (7-0)
How they can make the playoff:How they can make the playoff:While Penn State may not have the talent Ohio State has, a win over the Buckeyes will set them up with great chances to get into the final four.

13.Wisconsin (6-1)
How they can make the playoff:A tough upset loss to Illinois set the Badgers back, but if they win out, and they will have to beat Ohio State in the regular season, and then likely in the Big Ten championship game.

Pac-12
11.Oregon (6-1)
How they can make the playoff:How they can make the playoff:After a tough loss in week one to Auburn, Oregon will have to win the Pac-12 without losing another game to get into the CFP.

12.Utah (6-1)
How they can make the playoff:Utah, like Oregon, had one tough loss. If both teams meet in Los Angeles in the Pac-12 championship with just one loss each, the winner will have a great shot to get into the CFP.

SEC
1.Alabama (7-0)
How they can make the playoff:Alabama does need to survive this stretch without Tua but those games are easy. First is a game at home versus bottom-dweller Arkansas and then a bye to prepare for LSU, where he will likely return to action. If they do survive the stretch without Tua, they will be in the CFP.

2.LSU (7-0)
How they can make the playoff:LSU will have to go through Auburn and Alabama within the next month. This will let us see if QB Joe Burrow and the tigers are a team that is top-four quality and CFP worthy.

7.Florida (6-1)
How they can make the playoff:After wins over Miami, Auburn, and a close loss versus LSU, Florida has completed a tough stretch but will have to show that they can beat Georgia in a few weeks.

9.Auburn (6-1)
How they can make the playoff:Auburn lost to Florida a few weeks ago but have been hitting on all cylinders before their tough stretch next month against Georgia and Alabama.

10.Georgia (6-1)
How they can make the playoff:After a tough upset loss to South Carolina, Georgia struggled to beat Kentucky on Saturday. Upcoming tests against Auburn and will prove if Georgia is still the king of the SEC East.

cbhsports College Football Week 8 Preview

Top 6 entering Week 8 ()=Conference Record
1.Alabama 6-0 (3-0) Next Week:Tennessee

3.Ohio State 6-0 (3-0) Next Week:at.Northwestern

Outside Looking In
5.Clemson 6-0 (4-0) Next Week:at.Louisville
6.Wisconsin 6-0 (3-0) Next Week:at.Illinois

Games that will impact CFP in Week 7
9.Florida at. South Carolina
A week after Georgia went down to South Carolina, the other top team in the east division comes to Columbia. It might be tough for the Gamecocks to pull off another big upset but anything can happen in college football. Prediction:Florida 28, South Carolina 17

3.Clemson at. Louisville
This could be another trap game for the defending champions as the Louisville Cardinals are coming off a win over ranked Wake Forest. The Cards also have the ability to score with anyone in the country so expect with these two offenses we could see something like last week’s affair between Louisville and Wake Forest. Prediction:Clemson 38, Louisville 27

16.Michigan at. 7.Penn State
Jim Harbaugh’s job could very well be dependent on this season. One thing he hasn’t been able to do is win big games. Harbaugh and Michigan will get a chance to do that on Saturday night in Happy Valley. Prediction:Penn State 31, Michigan 20

Sorry for the issues with the post. I scheduled the post not thinking it was homecoming for school this week. I will go to the new blog schedule starting this week so get excited. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

2019 cbhsports College Gameday Predictions

Week 0-Miami vs. Florida (Orlando,FL) (August 24)
This is the obvious pick. Gameday has already announced they will be headed to the Camping World Kickoff Classic. Florida and Miami is the only notable game in week zero, so this is an obvious pick.

Week 1-Oregon vs. Auburn (August 31)
Gameday will usually go to the ABC/ESPN nightcap prime time and this Oregon-Auburn game will be that game. While Alabama is playing in Atlanta versus Duke, Oregon-Auburn should be the more intriguing match up. Oregon can’t get a blemish on their record or they won’t be headed to the playoff. Auburn can’t take a loss in a make or break year for Head Coach Gus Malzahn. This game should easily be the pick for game day in week one.

Week 2-LSU at. Texas (September 7)
Texas is officially back according most of the public and LSU is headed there. Austin would love to have game day versus an SEC powerhouse. A win for the Longhorns here could catapult them into the top seven teams in the country, and a win for LSU could mean that they have cemented themselves as legit college football playoff contenders.

Week 3-Clemson at. Syracuse (September 14)
This is easily Clemson’s biggest challenge in ACC play. College Gameday wants to include the reigning champs anytime they can so going to the Carrier Dome for this match up in a defacto ACC Atlantic championship will be a game everyone wants to see.

Week 4-Notre Dame at. Georgia (September 21)
While this game may be on CBS (Due to it being on Georgia’s home field thus CBS owning its rights), College Gameday will likely head to Athens for a key September out of conference match up. Notre Dame cannot afford a loss in Athens or they will be out of the playoff hunt. Georgia may be able to take a loss but they have the rest of the SEC to get through.

Week 5-Ohio State at. Nebraska (September 28)
This is the first time new Head Coach Ryan Day and Ohio State will be tested. Is Nebraska back? I guess we will see, beginning in this game and throughout the rest of this upcoming season. Nebraska and Ohio State should be the pick because of the hype around both of these new head coaches building up their programs again.

Week 6-Virginia Tech at. Miami (October 5)
If Virginia Tech and Miami be as successful as I think they will be, this game should be a pick made easy by ESPN and College Gameday. Because it will be an ACC contest, this game should be the ABC/ESPN prime time game, making the pick even more obvious to get the game between the two former Big East conference rivals.

Week 7-Oklahoma vs. Texas (October 12)
I don’t remember College Gameday not going to Dallas for this match up when both teams have at least been half decent. Oklahoma and Texas are the two favorites for the Big 12 so I see the winner of this game having a better shot at the College Football Playoff.

Week 8-Oregon at. Washington (October 19)
Another de facto division championship. Oregon and Washington could be the ABC/ESPN prime time game and it would be an obvious selection for game day if both squads were still in the top fifteen at that point.

Week 9-North Dakota State at. South Dakota State (October 26)
Gameday always picks an FCS game and picking two rivals including the team with easily the most wins this decade at the level (North Dakota State) is a no brainer.

Week 10-Georgia vs. Florida (Jacksonville,FL) (November 2)
Despite this game being on CBS, Gameday should pick this game. This game will likely determine who comes from the east division of the SEC and heads to Atlanta for the SEC Championship.

Week 11-LSU at. Alabama (November 9)
Gameday usually does not pick back to back SEC (thus CBS) games but LSU-Alabama has to be an exception. A week after the SEC East is likely determined, the SEC West will likely be determined with the winner of this game. That is why College Gameday will go to Tuscaloosa for this match up.

Week 12-Wake Forest at. Clemson (November 16)
There wasn’t a ton to pick from this week, and this is College Gameday’s biggest opportunity to go to Clemson. Wake Forest shouldn’t beat Clemson but they will be competitive versus the reigning champs.

Week 13-Penn State at. Ohio State (November 23)
This game will begin a tough strecth for Ohio State. Gameday should pick this game despite it being on FOX.

Week 14-Ohio State at. Michigan (November 30)
This is the obvious pick. “The Game” no matter what (maybe if both squads are unranked but that’s highly unlikely). So, I don’t see a way why College Gameday won’t be in Ann Arbor on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

2019-2020 season best five games in the Big 12
1.Texas vs. Oklahoma
This will most likely be the first of two matchups this season. The winner will have a better chance at the end of the season to get the Big 12 a CFP team.

2.Iowa State at. Texas
The winner of this game should get to ten wins and a chance at a Big 12 title.

3.Baylor at. Oklahoma State
Both of these teams need this win to contend in the Big 12 with heavywights Oklahoma and Texas.

4.Oklahoma at. Oklahoma State
Bedlam could have some bigger implications in 2019 than you think. OKSU could spoil Oklahoma’s chance at a third consecutive season in the college football playoff.

5.Texas at. TCU
After TCU had a horrible season a year ago, they look to get a win and potentially upset a top ten Texas team mid-season.
