Razorbacks are super regional bound

After four innings in game seven, the regional final of the Fayetteville Regional, Nebraska starter (and ace of their staff) Caleb Povich walked off the mound having retired 12 of the first 14 batters he faced, just one hit and one walk, and a two run lead, you would have thought Nebraska cruises to a victory. Plus, Arkansas freshman starter Jaxon Wiggins only made it two innings but was replaced by the best pitcher in college baseball, Kevin Kopps. Many hog fans probably did not worry but he had never gone six innings, especially when Wiggins left him with two men on and no one out in the third. Though, the best pitcher in baseball showed why he was in this outing. But, in the top of the fifth, Arkansas catcher Casey Opitz finally got the bats going for the hogs with just his second home run of the season, a solo shot that made the score 2-1. It was his first home run since game two of the opening SEC series versus Alabama on March 20. Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn explained that “We’ve seen Casey hit a bunch of balls out of here but I haven’t seen him go down and hit a line drive right handed that hard” about his star catcher. The swing energized not only the Razorback dugout but everyone at Baum-Walker Stadium too. An inning later, Robert Moore, the man many Razorback fans call “Big Hit Bob” launched a 2-1 pitch from reliever Cam Wynne to beyond right field to make it a whole new ball game. It was his fourteenth home run of the year. Offenses became quiet for an inning and a half before star center fielder Christian Franklin at bat in the bottom of the eighth, with a 2-2 count. Nebraska reliever Koty Frank got a quick two outs to open the eighth, so it looked like the game was going to go to the ninth inning tied. But, Franklin fouled off pitches and worked a walk to put the go-ahead baserunner on board. Before you knew it Razorback fans had beer hats on because the bases were loaded after back to back walks following Franklin’s. Replacing Cullen Smith, who went 0-3 batting on Monday, pinch hitter Charlie Welch came to potentially give the hogs their first lead of the game. Welch pinch hit to give Arkansas the outright SEC regular season title with a walk-off hit that looked like Welch would have made it to third base against Florida. Yet another pitcher was in the game for the Cornhuskers, Andrew Bunz, who threw a wild pitch that went behind home plate. That brought the speedy Franklin home. And on the very next pitch, Charlie Welch sent Baum-Walker stadium into a frenzy. Welch hit a no-doubter three run home run. Kevin Kopps only allowed one to reach in the top of the ninth, with two strikeouts in the half inning plus the final out being a popup to his star center fielder Christian Franklin. Arkansas moves on to the Super Regionals to face NC State, the winner of the Ruston Regional, in Fayetteville. My 2021 Super Regional Predictions and 2021 Fayetteville Super Regional Preview will both come out in the coming days.

2021 cbhsports Fayetteville Regional Preview

As a hog fan, it is my duty to go game by game to predict my number one overall seed Arkansas’s regional this weekend. Here we go:

Fayetteville Regional

Friday, June 4:
Game 1: No. 1 Arkansas (46-10) vs. NJIT (26-22), 3 p.m. ESPN3
NJIT is by far the worst team in the tournament to be frank. And there is no way in heck that they are going to beat a team that has won every SEC series this season as well as the SEC Tournament on Sunday.
Game 2: Northeastern (36-10) vs. Nebraska (31-12), 8 p.m., ESPN3
The Big Ten Champions head into Fayetteville against the winner of the CAA, Northeastern. This will be the close game of the two openers but expect the bats of Nebraska to get things going against the Northeastern ace fairly early. Nebraska wins a close game.

Saturday, June 5:
Game 3: 1.Arkansas vs. Nebraska
Arkansas Head Coach Dave Van Horn’s old school heads into face his current top ranked Razorbacks in a potential winner’s bracket regional semifinal. Nebraska will definitely pose challenges for the hogs not seen by NJIT but the top seeded team in the country should be okay in this one.
Game 4: NJIT vs. Northeastern
Northeastern should have a much easier time versus NJIT then Arkansas. Northeastern easily wins, knocks NJIT out of the field.

Sunday, June 6:
Game 5: Northeastern vs. Nebraska
In a rematch from June 4, Nebraska wins a one-run game to get a rematch with Arkansas.
Game 6: 1.Arkansas vs. Nebraska
You are not going to win every game against the same team every time. Nebraska sends the Fayetteville Regional to a seventh and deciding game.

Monday, June 7 (if necessary):
Game 7: 1.Arkansas vs. Nebraska
Arkansas survives a scare from Nebraska and heads to the Supers.

2021 cbhsports NCAA College Baseball Tournament Predictions

As a fair-weather college baseball fan that just became invested in my hogs within the past three years, I am just going to be making picks on who I think will get out of each regional, super regional, College World Series game, and the winners of the CWS Finals.

If you are a little out of line on how the NCAA Baseball Tournament works here it goes:

1.The first round is called regional play. It includes 16 four team regionals (Top seeds are seeded 1-16). The top seed in each regional hosts. This year due to the ongoing pandemic, a few weeks ago, 20 host sites were selected based off of the current landscape of college baseball to best control COVID-19 regulations. The committee was pretty great about choosing regional locations a few weeks early because the only regional not hosted by the actual team from that location is the Columbia Regional hosted by Old Dominion, the number 11 seed. The two seed matches up with the three seed and the one seed in each region matches up with the four seed. The winners of each of those games plays each other in the winners bracket and losers play each other in the losers bracket in a double-elimination style bracket. The winner of the winner’s bracket game moves on to the regional final while the loser plays a win or go home game versus the team that won in the loser’s bracket. Of course the team that loses in the loser’s bracket goes home. The winner of the game between the winner in the loser’s bracket and the loser in the winner’s bracket determines who will face the team that has not lost in the regional final. The loser’s bracket team has to beat the winner’s bracket team to force a seventh and deciding game in the regional. But if the winner’s bracket team wins the sixth game, then they go to the Super Regionals, the second round of the tournament.

2.In the Supers (Super Regionals) it is much more simple. The higher seeded team hosts the super regional of the two competing. It is a best two out of three series to determine who goes to Omaha for the College World Series, comprised of the eight remaining teams.

3.The College World Series is made up of two four team brackets similar to the way regional play is played. The two winners face each other in the winner’s bracket and the two losers face each other in the loser’s bracket. When a team loses two games, they are out in the double-elimination setting. The two teams that make it through the winner’s bracket face off in the College World Series Finals.

4.The College World Series is a best two out of three event.

NCAA approves one-time transfer waiver

The NCAA announced the Division I Council had voted to approve a plan that will allow all college athletes to transfer one time as an undergraduate without having to sit out a season. It will be applicable to football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s ice hockey, and baseball at the Division 1 level.

Chet Holmgren, the number one ranked player in the country according to multiple services, including 247Sports, has committed and signed with Gonzaga. The big man for Minnehaha (MN) Academy played with Jalen Suggs in high school who went on to lead Gonzaga to a national championship berth. Holmgren chose Gonzaga over a final seven that also included the likes of Georgetown, Memphis, Michigan, home state Minnesota, North Carolina, and Ohio State. Holmgren is the highest rated prospect to ever sign to head to Spokane. The second highest ranked signed Zag ever is Jalen Suggs. However, he announced his intentions to enter the 2021 NBA Draft this summer.

Check out everything going in the 2021 NCAA college basketball transfer portal with that link.

Big week for Diamond Hogs, Muss Bus

Oklahoma, a dangerous offensive team despite their 8-7 record through 15 games, comes to Baum-Walker Stadium to face the consensus number one ranked Arkansas Razorbacks, who are sitting at 12-1 after their first loss on Sunday in Ruston, Louisiana to Louisiana Tech. Still, the Diamond Hogs have won every series they have played going into their first midweek series and this weekend, their first conference series at home versus rival Alabama.

The Arkansas Razorbacks men’s basketball team ended their regular season and conference tournament play on a tear, goin 12-2 in their last 14 games, despite their loss on Saturday to LSU at the SEC Tournament Semifinals in Nashville. The “Muss Bus” is clearly rolling with the school’s highest seed since 2015 (Bobby Portis and Michael Qualls led Arkansas to a five seed), landing a three seed in the south region. Of course, the entire tournament will be played in Indiana, with the majority of games being played in Indianapolis. Arkansas opens against 14 seed Colgate at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. It will begin at 11:45 AM CT time on truTV. It will face the winner of the six seed Texas Tech and eleven seed Utah State if it were to beat the “fighting toothpaste”.

The Arkansas Razorbacks women’s basketball team was upset by Ole Miss in the SEC Tournament Quarterfinals. But, the hogs were still given a four seed in the Alamo Region, in the women’s tournament which will all be held in the Lone Star State. They will open against 13 seed Wright State. If the lady hogs win, they will play the winner of five seed Missouri State and 12 seed UC-Davis.

According to the Razorback football instagram and other official school sources, the team will have its first spring scrimmage on Saturday March 20. It will be open to fans. Arkansas will play its official spring game on Saturday April 17.

How USC could lead a Pac-12 exodus

USC, according to many sources, has grown to be upset with the Pac-12 for many reasons in the past few years. The biggest being that Southern Cal along with Oregon, UCLA, and Washington make as much or less revenue than smaller market schools in the Pac-12. The Athletic’s Andy Staples detailed his thoughts on what the Trojans should do moving forward in a podcast back in March of 2020.

Staples reminded listeners that in 2011, Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott tried to raid the Big 12 to add the likes of Texas and Oklahoma among others to make a power league that would’ve been know as the Pac-16. The Big 12 and Pac-12 then ended talks prematurely and the move never happened. But, this time the Big 12 television contract ends a year before the Pac-12’s does. The Big 12 needs to do the same thing the Pac-12 did a decade ago. Big 12 leadership needs to be aggressive come 2023 and 2024 because the moves will never happen if they are not. If the moves go through (adding Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington, and Washington State), a conference network would not be the most enticing. USC would most likely love the idea of making something similar to The Longhorn Network so they can make not only that revenue but the revenue from being in a new sixteen team league. Here are the different ways the conference could look:

No divisions, everyone team plays their two rivals and rotates everyone else.

Arizona

Arizona State

Iowa State

Kansas

Kansas State

Oklahoma

Oklahoma State

Oregon

Oregon State

Southern California

Stanford

Texas

Texas Christian

Texas Tech

Washington

Washington State

Or add more from the Big 12. I got this idea from a fishduck.com article. In this scenario, the Big 12 would keep West Virginia in the league, and split the so called “Big 16” into east and west divisions. California, Oregon State, Stanford, Washington State would be left out of the conference and would likely join the Mountain West. For future scheduling, teams like Oregon and Washington, who have left their instate rivals behind, can choose to schedule them during their nonconference slates. With the Pac-12 basically out of the window, the Rose Bowl would pick this conference up to match up with the Big Ten in Pasadena every January.

East:Baylor, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas Tech, TCU, West Virginia

West: Arizona State, Arizona, Kansas, Kansas State, Oregon, UCLA, USC, Washington

Or, USC could join historic rival Notre Dame as an independent. If USC were to leave, “the conference of champions”, then Oregon and Washington would also likely consider it. If UCLA didn’t end up joining USC as an independent, the two schools would still likely play annually. USC would likely have to schedule a few more Pac-12 games and look elsewhere to finish out its schedules every year.

How I would do conference realignment

Here’s my updated view on how I think conference realignment will go when conference TV deals end from 2023-2026. Instead of making a lengthy post about it, check out my slide deck explaining everything and my YouTube video.

My three favorite teams (for my favorite teams) to beat

I love when my team beats these three. Yes, we usually stay objective on the blog, but since it’s Sunday I thought we’d have some fun. These are not ranked.

LSU Tigers (College Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Track)
Whether it is any of these sports, I love when my hogs destroy LSU. A big new reason for me is when they left us for Texas A&M rivalry weekend wise and left us out in the cold playing a forced rivalry with Missouri.

Duke Blue Devils (College Basketball)
I got tons of respect for Coach K and everything and everyone in the Duke program. But it feels really good when my North Carolina Tar Heels shock the mighty Blue Devils. But other than basketball, I don’t mind the Dukies.

Ole Miss Rebels (Really any sport but yeah let’s just say every sport)
Even though I love the Manning family, the feeling I have when Arkansas defeats Ole Miss in any sport is remarkable. Nothing comes close to these three, for me though but if I had any honorable mentions for this list they would include NC State, Texas, and Texas A&M.

Conference Realignment (Part 3): What if the Big 12 disbands (and where would each school go?) (My Big 12 Realignment and what should happen in the next conference realignment)

What if the Big 12 disbands? What conference would each school end up?

Baylor
Baylor is in a small Texas market so they would have to tag along with the other Texas schools to the Pac-12 super conference, the Pac-16. I don’t think they will do that so I think that the American conference will come calling.Conference Pick:American

Iowa State
Iowa State would fit well in the Big 10 with a good basketball program and a football program on the rise. The Iowa-Iowa State rivalry would be huge, and within a few years they will have recruiting pipelines ranging from Nebraska east to the New York area. They could also go to the ACC or the American if Iowa doesn’t want them there.Conference Pick:Big 10

Kansas
Like Iowa State, the Big 10 would want basketball-heavy Kansas. While their football program needs work (a lot of WORK!) Kansas would come into the Big 10 ready to dominate in basketball.Conference Pick:Big 10

Kansas State
I don’t really know which conference to put Kansas State in so I’m just going to tag them along with Kansas.Conference Pick:Big 10

Oklahoma
When Texas wants to join the Pac-12 and the SEC comes calling… Conference Pick:SEC

Oklahoma State
The SEC may come calling if they join Oklahoma in a package deal which is probably want Oklahoma State wants.Conference Pick:SEC

TCU
TCU would love to join the SEC but I don’t think Texas A&M would want them in their conference.Joining the Pac-12 super conference would be the best bet for the Horned Frogs.Conference Pick:Pac-12

Texas
A sticking point for the crown jewel for the Big 12 is the Longhorn network.Between the Pac-12 and the SEC,the Pac-12 would want the Longhorn Network so…Conference Pick:Pac-12

Texas Tech
Tagging along with Texas and TCU,Texas Tech would join the Pac-12 super conference.Conference Pick:Pac-12

West Virginia
The odd team out in the Big 12 would join the ACC with built in rivalries with Pittsburgh,Virginia Tech,Syracuse, and Boston College are all built in rivalries from the old Big East and as their academics improve they would be a perfect fit.Conference Pick:ACC

Is Arkansas in the wrong conference? Immediate reaction to New York Times’s article

I got this article from someone I cannot name and are my hogs in the wrong conference. They have had just one top ten finish since joining the conference in 1991 with South Carolina, and since then has squandered time with Bret Bielema. While it would be easier in the Big 12, Arkansas get seven million dollars a year in the always dominant in football and baseball SEC. I mean at this point West Virginia and Texas are in the same conference but Texas A&M and Texas don’t meet once. Colorado’s move to the Pac-12 is difficult to examine. Former Arkansas player and Ole Miss head football coach Houston Nutt said “You’ve got to be better at recruiting and evaluating.” Which I mean in the backyards of powers Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and LSU is really easy, Arkansas with former Texas high school and SMU Head Coach Chad Morris goes into the lone star state with just one game a year in Texas, in Arlington against old Southwest rival Texas A&M who’ve they have lost to,what six times in a row now? While analysts have talked about that it is great that Arkansas, Rutgers, Boston College, and Louisville (and Pitt,West Virginia, Syracuse and others) that they are in power five conferences,I think those programs would beg to differ.
