College Football Playoff modifies seeding for 2025-2026 season

On Thursday the College Football Playoff Management Committee, including 10 FBS conference commissioners and the Director of Athletics at the University of Notre Dame, “voted unanimously to modify the seeding and bye policies of the 12-team Playoff for the 2025-2026 season.”

Now, the new policy guarantees the five highest-ranked conference champions a spot in the Playoff. But, there will no longer be a bye for the four highest-ranked champions. The bracket will now “be seeded directly based on the final ranking of the CFP Selection Committee, with the four highest ranked teams receiving a first-round bye.”

If one or more of the five highest ranked conference champions are ranked outside of the top 12, that team would move up to the 12th seed, 11th seed, or higher based on the number of conference champions outside of the top 12 in the final rankings.

Executive director of the College Football Playoff Rich Clark said that “After evaluating the first year of the 12-team Playoff, the CFP Management Committee felt it was in the best interest of the game to make this adjustment.” In addition, “This change will continue to allow guaranteed access to the Playoff by rewarding teams for winning their conference championship, but it will also allow us to construct a postseason bracket that recognizes the best performance on the field during the entire regular season” Clark continued.

Everything else will remain the same for the College Football Playoff during the upcoming season. The rankings of the teams will continue to be done by the selection committee. Teams ranked 5-12 will play in the College Football Playoff First Round with the higher seed hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher seeded institution (12. @ 5., 11. @ 6., 10. @ 7., and 9. @ 8.). “The four highest ranked teams will be assigned to Playoff Quarterfinals bowls on Selection Day in ranking order and in consideration of current contract bowl relationships” (such as the Big Ten’s close relationship with the Rose Bowl).

The college football season begins with week 0 on Saturday, August 23.

Projecting where ESPN’s College GameDay goes each week of the 2025 college football season

August 23
Iowa State vs. Kansas State (Dublin; Aer Lingus College Football Classic)
ESPN’s College GameDay made there way to Dublin for the first time last August so, this is the obvious pick for if they go anywhere for week 0. The rivalry called “Farmageddon” is an intense one every year as both squads will look to get their first Big 12 victories of the season a week before most schools start playing. The Wildcats look to avenge their Thanksgiving weekend loss to the Cyclones in Ireland.

August 30
Texas @ Ohio State
In what should be an easy pick for game 1 of the regular season, the reigning national champion Buckeyes (a favorite of College GameDay over the years) face Texas in a rematch of the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Cotton Bowl last December. It will be Arch Manning’s debut as the starting quarterback for the Longhorns as they attempt to avenge their loss to Ohio State.

September 6
Michigan @ Oklahoma
After going to a Big Ten-SEC match up at the home of a Big Ten school, things would flip a week later if the crew heads to Norman for another battle between teams from the top two conferences in college football. Brent Venables’ Sooners look to improve from a 6-7 2024 campaign with a win over Michigan’s new look offense with freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood taking over as the signal-caller in Ann Arbor.

September 13
Georgia @ Tennessee
Nico Iamaleava’s departure from Tennessee may complicate choosing this game but if his replacement helps the Volunteers get to 2-0 on the young season, this should be the choice for week 3. Georgia, the back to back national champions in 2022 and 2023, look to get back to the mountain top by starting SEC play with a dominant win on “Rocky Top”.

September 20
Florida @ Miami
Florida better not be struggling at this point in the season or College GameDay will not be on site in Coral Gables for the Gators and Hurricanes’ second match up in as many years. The Gators face LSU in week 3 before heading to south beach. Miami QB Cam Ward exploded in a 41-17 win over their instate rivals to open the season in Gainesville last fall. Now, former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck faces Florida again, a school he originally committed to play baseball back when he was in high school before flipping to the Bulldogs. There are too many storylines in this game to not choose it if both teams are at least 2-1 entering action on September 20.

September 27
Oregon @ Penn State
A rematch of last season’s Big Ten championship is my pick for College GameDay this week. Alabama does make its return trip to Athens for a battle with Georgia but the lack of Big Ten flavor makes me think they will head to State College, another location the crew loves going to almost every season. Drew Allar returns at quarterback for the Nittany Lions as they will face a new look Oregon roster who comes off of exiting the College Football Playoff to new Big Ten foe Ohio State in the quarterfinals.

October 4
Clemson @ North Carolina
There is no true headliner game going into the season in week 6. But, there are a few options that seem realistic. Seven time Super Bowl winning head coach Bill Belichick’s debut season in Chapel Hill will be interesting. The Tar Heels welcome reigning ACC champion Clemson to town to open conference play. If the Tar Heels have an okay or better record and Clemson is as good as we think they are entering the month of October, this pick makes sense for College GameDay.

October 11
Oklahoma vs. Texas (Dallas)
Texas is normally the favorite entering “Red River Rivalry” Saturday and probably will be with just single loss or none (probably to Ohio State). But, former Washington State QB John Mateer is now in Norman with a receiving core that will hopefully be healthier next season and a defense that loses linebacker Danny Stutsman among others but should be good with head coach Brent Venables now calling plays. College GameDay was not at Cotton Bowl Stadium for the Texas State Fair last October but I predict them to return there this fall.

October 18
Texas Tech @ Arizona State
If College GameDay wants a chance to head to Tempe, Arizona, to see the reigning Big 12 champion Arizona State, this will be a good opportunity. Young coaching super star Kenny Dillingham proved himself as he brought the Sun Devils to the College Football Playoff Quarterfinals. His quarterback Sam Leavitt returns next to a cast of new offensive playmakers. On the other hand, Texas Tech will look to bounce back from a tough Liberty Bowl loss to Arkansas in December. Head coach Joey McGuire should have his guys ready as his team faces the Sun Devils.

October 25
Alabama @ South Carolina
Two teams that were just outside of qualification for the first ever 12-team playoff last fall face off in a rematch from last season. South Carolina likely would have been in with a win over the Crimson Tide. The Gamecocks fell 27-25 to Alabama last October while the Crimson Tide must have been looking forward to the “Iron Bowl” against Auburn, losing to Oklahoma in Norman 24-3 the third Saturday in November.

November 1
Penn State @ Ohio State
It feels like the College GameDay crew is always at this match up. Penn State has not beaten Ohio State since 2016 when they blocked the field goal and brought it to the end zone. The first day of November in 2025 may be the Nittany Lions’ best shot since then. Penn State signal caller Drew Allar is one of the most experienced in the country and with a talented defense every season, Ohio State should be challenged at home versus the Nittany Lions.

November 8
LSU @ Alabama
Another game College GameDay is seemingly always at is a rivalry in the SEC that was built by coaches like Nick Saban and Les Miles. Can Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer and LSU’s Brian Kelly bring that rivalry back as both squads look to beat the other and make the College Football Playoff after failing to do so last fall?

November 15
Texas @ Georgia
Texas and Georgia are set for their third match up since the Longhorns entered the SEC. The Longhorns are still looking for their first win over the Bulldogs after falling to them last October and in the SEC Championship game in December. This is the obvious pick for the show the third weekend of November as Arch Manning returns to Athens where many thought he might be playing college football when he was being recruited in high school.

November 22
USC @ Oregon
The second to last Saturday of the regular season is always wide open because of the amount of teams down south that play Group of 5 and FCS schools that weekend. So, I think College GameDay goes west. Last season’s top overall seed in the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff was Oregon. This is the best opportunity I had left to give the Ducks the premiere Saturday morning pregame show against old Pac-12 rival. USC will be interesting this season as a new quarterback steps in after Miller Moss’ exit to the transfer portal. The Trojan defense improved last season but if they want to beat Oregon, Lincoln Riley will need his defense to be at that level or better to win on the road in Autzen Stadium.

November 29
Ohio State @ Michigan
I could totally see College GameDay going to Austin in Texas A&M’s first return trip to face their instate rivals as SEC foes but I believe they will pass on it to go to “The Game” again. Ohio State will be at the very least a top two team in nation in the pre-season but have not beaten Michigan in four seasons. The Wolverines did win a national championship in one of those seasons (2023) but it feels like Ryan Day’s team has always been has always been more talented. But, they have yet to do the job.

December 6
SEC Championship Game (Atlanta)
College GameDay normally heads to Atlanta for the SEC Championship. With the conference entering its second season with Disney, and the league looking to win its first national championship since 2023, the best storylines will be there as the final College Football Playoff rankings will come the following day.

December 13
Army vs. Navy (Baltimore)
The only game the second Saturday in December every year will be in Baltimore this winter. Army-Navy is the classic American rivalry and College GameDay loves going to the celebration of military football every season.

I wanted to end this post by thanking Lee Corso for all of his great years on College GameDay. The show will never be the same after his last appearance ever on Saturday morning of week 1. Thank you again Coach!

2025 cbhsports men’s NCAA College Basketball Tournament Final Four Preview

Saturday, April 5
1.Auburn (27-4) vs. 1.Florida (27-4)
The Alamodome (San Antonio)
6:09 PM ET, CBS
The first Final Four with all one seeds since 2008 tips off with a match up between two old rivals down south. Back on February 8th, Florida became the first team in the SEC to beat Auburn. The Gators beat the Tigers 90-81 on the road at Neville Arena. After that loss, Auburn still won the regular season crown in the league but did not play as well as they were back in November, December, and most of January. They picked it up with better performances in the south regional in Atlanta with potential national player of the year Johni Broome (47 points and 30 rebounds) and guards Tahaad Pettiford (30 points) and Denver Jones (28 points) performing well over the last two games in wins over Michigan and Michigan State. The aforementioned Broome exited Sunday’s Elite Eight match up against the Spartans with an injury before returning to the game after his x-rays were negative. He did not practice on Tuesday and Wednesday but returned to practice on Thursday. On the other hand, Florida had to go on a big run to beat three seed Texas Tech to advance to the Final Four. Gator guard Walter Clayton has exploded during the NCAA Tournament scoring 23 points against UConn in the Round of 32 and 30 against the Red Raiders in Elite Eight. Throughout the tournament the Gators have not been as consistent overall as they were to finish the regular season and when they won the SEC Tournament Championship. Clayton will need not only his backcourt mates like Alijah Martin, Will Richard, and Denzel Aberdeen but also Alex Condon, Rueben Chinyelu, Thomas Waugh, and Micah Handlogten in the front court. All of these guys have been great at some point during the season but beating the nation’s top overall seed twice in a season is no easy task. Auburn is playing better basketball than Florida right now but if Broome is limited with his injury, the Tigers will have to rely more on their other veteran big man Dylan Cardwell. A Tiger win could set up an ACC/SEC Challenge rematch if the Blue Devils are also able to come out victorious on Saturday. An SEC battle with Todd Golden facing his old boss Bruce Pearl with a national championship appearance on the line. Projected Score: Auburn 85, Florida 80

1.Duke (28-3) vs. 1.Houston (27-4)
The Alamodome (San Antonio)
8:49 PM ET, CBS
Duke has been the best team in the NCAA Tournament but do not look past Houston’s run either. Both teams dominated their leagues during the regular season with both squads losing only one conference game each. Duke’s Jon Scheyer built an almost perfect NBA-like roster around likely top pick in this summer’s NBA Draft, freshman forward Cooper Flagg. Fellow freshmen Kon Knueppel (who will likely join him as a lottery pick this summer), Khaman Maluach, and Caleb Foster. It was really Scheyer’s ability to add veterans this past off-season that have been at this stage before like former Purdue forward Mason Gillis, who played in the national championship last season with the Boilermakers to help lead this team driven by freshmen. Houston is certainly known for its defense and the Cougars turned in a dominant defensive performance against Tennessee in the Elite Eight, holding the Volunteers to just 15 first half points. Even though the game became close in the second half, guard Emanuel Sharp answered almost every one of Tennessee’s runs with a three pointer, scoring 16 points in the victory. Kelvin Sampson’s team will also need leading scorer LJ Cryer a terrific as well as forward J’Wan Roberts to be fantastic against Duke defense. In addition, the balance of Houston will have to match the balance of Duke. Whether it is fellow bigs Joseph Tuggler and Ja’Vier or guards Milos Uzan and Mylik Wilson, they will have to match what Duke does. The Cougars are capable of winning the game because they have been the best defensive team in their country but it will be their offense that will be their letdown against this Duke team that has a defense that is probably the second best left in this Final Four field. Projected Score: Duke 77, Houston 72

National Championship Game Projection
Monday, April 7
1.Duke over 1.Auburn
8:50 PM ET, CBS
1.Duke over 1.Auburn
In a rematch of the ACC/SEC Challenge, the Blue Devils sweep the Tigers.

2.Duke 27-3 (18-1) ACC Next Up: @ North Carolina (20-11) (Saturday, 6:30 PM ET, ESPN)
3.Houston 26-4 (18-1) Big 12 Next Up: @ Baylor (18-12) (Saturday, 10 PM ET, ESPN)
4.Tennessee 24-6 (11-6) SEC Next Up: South Carolina (12-18) (Saturday, 2 PM ET, SECN)
5.Florida 26-4 (13-4) SEC Next Up: Ole Miss (21-9) (Saturday, 6 PM ET, SECN)
6.St. John’s 26-4 (17-2) Big East Next Up: @ 20.Marquette (22-8) (Saturday, 12 PM ET, FOX)
7.Alabama 23-7 (12-5) SEC Next Up: @ 1.Auburn (27-3) (Saturday, 2:30 PM ET, ESPN)
8.Michigan State 25-5 (16-3) Big Ten Next Up: 17.Michigan (22-8) (Sunday, 12 PM ET, CBS)
9.Texas Tech Big 12 Next Up: @ Arizona State (13-17) (Saturday, 8 PM ET, ESPNU)
10.Iowa State 22-8 (12-7) Big 12 Next Up: @ Kansas State (15-15) (Saturday, 1:30 PM ET, CBS)

Friday, March 7
18.Purdue (22-9) @ Illinois (19-11)
8 PM ET, FOX
Purdue comes into Champagne playing great basketball with wins last Friday night against UCLA and scoring 100 points against Rutgers on Tuesday night. Illinois was blown out by Duke on February 22nd but since have taken care of Iowa and then 15.Michigan by 20 points. If the Fighting Illini can defeat the Boilermakers at home to finish out their regular season, they will feel confident about landing at least a six seed on Selection Sunday entering the Big Ten Tournament. Purdue dropped four games in a row before its recent winning streak and they will need guard Fletcher Loyer to continue his consistent play to support stars Braden Smith and Trey Kaufman-Renn. Smith, Kaufman-Renn, and Loyer combined for 62 points in the win over the Scarlet Knights. Similarly to the Boilermakers, Illinois had three prominent scorers in their last victory. Guards Tre White, Kasparas Jakucionis, and Kylan Boswell’s combined 55 points lifted them over the Wolverines. Those three will have to all turn in similar performances if they want to protect home court, beat Purdue, and get a better seed in Indianapolis at next week’s Big Ten Tournament. Projected Score: Purdue 82, Illinois 79

Saturday, March 8
19.Kentucky (20-10) @ 15.Missouri (21-9)
12 PM ET, ESPN
Missouri hosts Kentucky coming off of a Wednesday loss to rival Oklahoma. A win for the Tigers could put them in position to lock up the five seed at the SEC Tournament in Nashville next week but a loss could do the same for Kentucky as it would give the Wildcats a win and the two teams matching conference records at 10-8. Missouri must defend at a higher level after giving up 90+ points in four of its previous five games. Without the steadying force of guard Jaxson Robinson offensively for Kentucky, it might be the perfect opportunity of Dennis Gates’ team to turn in a better performance on that side of the basketball. Guards Caleb Grill, Mark Mitchell, and Tony Perkins can light it up on offense but they will have to go through one of the nation’s top point guards, Lamont Butler. Butler, will have to lead the ‘Cats on the road with fellow guard Otega Oweh, playing his best basketball of the season, sharpshooter Kobe Brea, and forward Amari Williams, who is capable of turning in big performances in big games. If Kentucky can consistently make outside shots on the road, they can stay in the game, but Missouri needs to win this game and I believe they will. Projected Score: Missouri 92, Kentucky 85

6.St. John’s (26-4) @ 20.Marquette (22-8)
12 PM ET, FOX
Marquette fell to UConn on the road and outside of the top three in the Big East entering the final weekend of the regular season. Protecting home floor against the Big East regular season champion St. John’s will be difficult but a win over the Red Storm. A Huskies’ loss to Seton Hall at home, however unlikely that may be, would send Marquette to be the three seed in the Big East Tournament next week at Madison Square Garden. However, even if UConn does not lose and Marquette still finds a way to beat the Johnnies, it would be a huge win that would put them in consideration for a protected seed on one of the top four lines with a few more wins next week in New York City. Rick Pitino’s team does not rely too much on perimeter shooting instead attacking the ball inside and playing tough on defense. His three leading scorers, guard RJ Luis (17.8 points and 7 reboundsper game), forward Zuby Ejiofor (14 points and 8 rebounds), guard Kadary Richmond (13 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists) make the team go. Marquette will need someone outside of potential All-American guard Kam Jones (18.5 points and 6 assists). Guards Stevie Mitchell (11 points) and Chase Ross (10.6 points) must support Jones if they want to enter postseason play with a victory. Projected Score: St. John’s 83, Marquette 80

7.Alabama (23-7) @ 1.Auburn (27-3)
2:30 PM ET, ESPN
Alabama heads to the Plains to face SEC regular season champion Auburn in a rematch from their number one-number two battle, a few weeks ago. Both teams enter Saturday afternoon’s season finale off of losses. Auburn did not sleep walk into College Station on Tuesday night but after beating Kentucky on Saturday to clinch the SEC title, Texas A&M needed a win and they got it on their senior night over the Tigers. Alabama fell to Florida at home in a top five battle on Wednesday and to avoid their eighth loss before the SEC Tournament, they must avoid getting swept by Auburn. The Tigers should be more focused than they were on Tuesday night. Likely national player of the year Johni Broome needs to turn in a terrific performance because without veteran guard Denver Jones help to score, defend, and lead due to injury, Broome will need freshman guard Tahaad Pettiford to step up next to veterans Miles Kelly and Chad Baker-Mazara on the wings and Dylan Cardwell and Chris Moore inside the paint. If Auburn’s efficient offense can get going, Alabama guard Mark Sears will have to continue his hot shooting performances and set his teammates up with good passes for assists. The Crimson Tide’s Grant Nelson, Labaron Philon, Latrell Wrightsell, Chris Youngblood, and Jarin Stevenson must all turn in quality performances against an Auburn team that has lost just twice in one of the most difficult conference seasons of all-time. Auburn will get its third consecutive win over Alabama on Saturday. Projected Score: Auburn 95, Alabama 90

Ole Miss (21-9) @ 5.Florida (26-4)
6 PM ET, SECN
Since losing three in a row to Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, and Auburn, Ole Miss has bounced back and beaten Oklahoma and 4.Tennessee to begin the month of March. That’s a pretty good start for Chris Beard’s team as they head on the road to face another AP top 5 team, the Florida Gators. The Gators, as I mentioned in the Alabama-Auburn preview earlier in this post, defeated 7.Alabama on the road on Wednesday. Likely All-American guard Walter Clayton Jr. has been terrific this season, averaging 17 points and dishing out 4 assists a game headlines a group in the backcourt that has been one of the best in the country this season for Todd Golden. Joining Clayton Jr. is Alijah Martin and Will Richard, who can both score and bring tremendous effort on the defensive side too. Denzel Aberdeen has been a great backup for Clayton Jr. while Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, and Rueben Chinyelu make up their front court. Condon was terrific against the Crimson Tide, scoring 27 points and 10 rebounds. Ole Miss’ awesome home environment and forward Jaemyn Brakefield (19 points in the victory over Tennessee) got the game winning rebound in overtime off of a Sean Pedulla miss and put it in for a win that could put the Rebels on track to move back up the seed list. Pedulla leads Ole Miss at scoring at almost 15 points a contest while Malik Dia, Dre Davis and the aforementioned Brakefield serve as defensive stoppers for Beard that are tough offensive players. Ole Miss can keep this game close but Florida, at this point in the season, seems like the SEC team that is best fit to win games deep in March and into April this postseason. Projected Score: Florida 87, Ole Miss 80

2.Duke (27-3) @ North Carolina (20-11)
6:30 PM ET, ESPN
Duke has been the best team in a weak ACC all season and has been dominant of late especially. The second ranked Blue Devils, one of only two teams that have beaten 1.Auburn so far this season, have won their last seven games by an average of 32 points since their last loss to Clemson on the road at Littlejohn Coliseum. In their last game against Wake Forest, freshman forward Cooper Flagg scored 28 points and dished out 7 assists in the 33 point victory over the Demon Deacons. Junior guard Tyrese Proctor has established himself as a leader and a defensive presence on the perimeter while freshmen Kon Knueppel and center Khaman Maluach have supported Flagg and Proctor as the third and fourth options offensively. The way Duke has been playing, this game has an eerily similar feeling to the closeout game between the Blue Devils and Tar Heels in 2022. The only two differences are that Coach K is not the head coach of Duke and the game is not in Cameron Indoor Stadium, instead in the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill. Duke is in line to be a number one seed and North Carolina is squarely on the bubble. North Carolina’s win in that game won March 4, 2022 propelled the Tar Heels into the NCAA Tournament as an eight seed, and they won the third match up with the Blue Devils in the Final Four semifinal in New Orleans, ending Coach K’s career. North Carolina does not have program stalwart Armando Bacot, sharpshooting forward Brady Manek, and Caleb Love on the roster any more but still have senior guard RJ Davis, who was an All-American last season but has not played near that level consistently this season. The Tar Heels beat Virginia Tech on Tuesday, 91-59. Freshman guard Ian Jackson scored 19 points in the victory. For North Carolina to avenge their February loss to Duke, Jackson will have to be an elite scorer. Junior guard Seth Trimble added 17 points. With the lack of an inside presence like Armando Bacot, Trimble will have to continue playing big for the Tar Heels. If Jackson and Trimble continue their hot play combined with the improved play of Jae’Lyn Withers, Drake Powell, and Ven-Allen Lubin there is a chance that Hubert Davis’ team can win on senior day in Chapel Hill. Projected Score: Duke 90, North Carolina 80

Sunday, March 9
17.Michigan (22-8) @ 8.Michigan State (25-5)
12 PM ET, CBS
Michigan State locked up the Big Ten regular season championship after Thursday night’s win at Iowa. The Spartans did not play their best basketball but played well enough to win. Tom Izzo’s team does go through spurts without scoring but when they need a basket, they rely on guards Jaden Akins (13 points) and Jase Richardson (11 points) to score. The Spartans look to sweep the Wolverines after defeating them in Ann Arbor in late February. Michigan’s struggles in their last two games against Illinois at home and Maryland on the road are the amount of turnovers they have. The Wolverines had a combined 27 turnovers in those two losses and to beat the Spartans on their home floor, they will have to avoid turning it over. The combination of bigs Vlad Goldin (16.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks) and Danny Wolf (12.7 points, 9.6 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks) make them go. But, it will be up to Wolf (a point-center) and lead guard Tre Donaldson (12 points and 4 assists) to make the right passes and not turn the ball over which could lead to points for the Spartans. The battle for the state of Michigan should be a great Big Ten basketball game to finish out the regular season. Projected Score: Michigan State 81, Michigan 77

2025 cbhsports Arkansas Baseball Preview

It is Dave Van Horn’s 23rd season on the Hill and the Diamond Hogs are again ready to compete for the program’s first national championship. Having already accomplished eight SEC Western Division championships, three overall SEC titles, one SEC tournament title, 20 NCAA Tournament berths, seven College World Series appearances, four top five finishes (2009, 2012, 2018, 2022), and one memorable runner-up finish. Dave Van Horn knows his baseball team can win it all this season and he has been confident about his team throughout the pre-season. No season in the SEC is easy as Arkansas plays nine D1 Baseball pre-season top 25 teams including eight in the league (1.Texas A&M, 3.LSU, 4.Tennessee, 8.Georgia, 10.Florida, 16.Vanderbilt, and 19.Texas). With the SEC getting rid of divisions and Texas and Oklahoma playing their first season in the ball park in the conference, Van Horn’s team will see many familiar faces in and out of conference play. After opening the season on Valentine’s weekend with Washington State (February 14-17) at Baum-Walker Stadium, they travel again to Arlington to face three high profile teams, including Kansas State (February 21), who eliminated the Razorbacks from the 2024 Fayetteville Regional last June. They also face fellow Big 12 opponent 23.TCU (on February 22), who eliminated the Razorbacks from the 2023 Fayetteville Regional, meaning two Big 12 teams have eliminated the Razorbacks from their own regional the last two seasons. Former Horned Frog outfielder Logan Maxwell will have a homecoming of sorts in that match up, playing his former team TCU in the Dallas area. After getting through the first two weeks of March in non-conference play, a trip to Swayze Field awaits against rival Ole Miss (March 14-16), one of their two permanent opponents in the new look SEC, and the team that eliminated the Razorbacks from the College World Series semifinals in 2022. Midweek dates with 2023 College World Series team Oral Roberts (March 18-19) and familiar opponent Missouri State (March 25) sandwich a weekend series with South Carolina (March 21-23). A trip to Nashville to face Vanderbilt (March 28-30) to end the month of March comes next, where new hog infielder Cameron Kozeal makes his return to face his former team. After facing UAPB to open April in North Little Rock and then again in Fayetteville (April 15), the Razorbacks face their other permanent rival, Missouri (March 4-6) before continuing their home stand against Arkansas State (April 8). A trip to Athens to face former Razorback pitching coach Wes Johnson, who has turned Georgia (April 11-13) into a quality program with a Super Regional appearance last summer. The last two nonconference teams the Diamond Hogs will play this spring will be against Little Rock (April 22-23) and a rematch against Missouri State (April 29), this time on the road in Springfield. Games against the Trojans and Bears are in between a trip to Gainesville, that would begin the Razorbacks’ four consecutive SEC series against four pre-season top 19 teams. The season will end with SEC series against 10.Florida on the road (April 25-27), back home against old rival 19.Texas (May 2-4), a trip to Alex Box Stadium to face 3.LSU (May 9-11), and finally facing former hitting coach Tony Vitello and 4.Tennessee (May 15-17) to wrap up the regular season at Baum-Walker Stadium. Can Dave Van Horn’s new look offense and new star pitcher Gabe Gaeckle overcome the loss of Hagen Smith and back to back seasons of being eliminated in their own regional against the aforementioned Horned Frogs in 2023 and Southeastern Missouri State 2024? We will find out as the season begins tomorrow with game one of a four game series against Washington State.

2025 Schedule Predictions (Rankings below are based on the D1 Baseball 2025 Pre-Season Top 25)
2/14-17 Washington State
Projected Record: 3-1
2/21 Kansas State (Arlington; College Baseball Series)
2/22 23.TCU (Arlington; College Baseball Series)
2/23 Michigan (Arlington; College Baseball Series)
Projected Record: 5-2
The hogs head to Arlington to face three teams that are commonly in the NCAA Tournament, two of whom knocked them out of the tournament the previous two seasons. They should split the games against the Big 12 teams and defeat Michigan for a second consecutive season in Texas.
2/25 Grambling
Projected Record: 6-2
2/28-3/2 Charlotte
Projected Record: 9-2
3/4-5 ULM
Projected Record: 11-2
3/7-9 Portland
Projected Record: 13-2
3/11 Central Arkansas
Projected Record: 15-2
3/14-16 @ Ole Miss
Arkansas swept Ole Miss a season ago at home inside Baum-Walker Stadium and took two out of three from the Rebels the last time they matched up at Swayze in Oxford. I expect the same thing to happen this season when the Razorbacks travel to Mississippi.
Projected Record: 17-3 (2-1) SEC
3/18-19 Oral Roberts
Projected Record: 19-4
3/21-23 South Carolina
The Gamecocks return to Fayetteville for the first time since 2023. They only were able to win one game last time they were there and the atmosphere at Baum-Walker will help the Razorbacks will help them keep South Carolina from winning the series again.
Projected Record: 21-5 (4-2) SEC
3/25 Missouri State
Projected Record: 22-5
3/28-30 @ 16.Vanderbilt
The last time Arkansas was on the west end, they lost the series to the Commodores, keeping them from winning an outright SEC championship in 2023. Dave Van Horn should have his best offense since the 2021 team that was the number one overall seed so the Razorbacks should take two of three from the Vandy boys.
Projected Record: 24-6 (6-3) SEC
4/1 UAPB (North Little Rock)
Projected Record: 25-6
4/4-6 Missouri
Not to say that Arkansas’ now annual series with Missouri will be three free wins every season but the talent level of the Razorbacks compared to the Tigers should help them get the sweep. Having Missouri on the schedule every season will certainly help the hogs get a few wins every season now that they are a permanent opponent.
Projected Record: 28-6 (9-3) SEC
4/8 Arkansas State
Projected Record: 29-6
4/11-13 @ 8.Georgia
Former Arkansas pitching coach Wes Johnson and the Bulldogs may not have Golden Spikes winner Charlie Condon any more but they did backload with transfers good enough to defeat the Razorbacks. The Razorbacks lost their first SEC series when they traveled to Athens in 2023. They will fall for the first time in a series in the SEC in 2025 when they face Georgia.
Projected Record: 30-8 (10-5) SEC
4/15 UAPB
Projected Record: 32-8
4/17-19 1.Texas A&M
Hitting coach Michael Earley took over the nation’s top ranked Aggies after watching his boss Jim Schlossnagle head across the state to his team’s biggest rival, Texas, who just joined the SEC 2024. Van Horn’s team clinched the final SEC West title with just one win over A&M in the final regular season series of 2024. Texas A&M boasts outfielder Jace LaViolette, a national player of the year frontrunner, and someone that gave Arkansas many problems last season. Arkansas loses back to back series after winning their first four.
Projected Record: 33-10 (11-7) SEC
4/22-23 Little Rock
Projected Record: 35-10
4/25-27 @ 10.Florida
Dave Van Horn’s Razorbacks know Kevin O’Sullivan’s Florida Gators very well and they have gone into Gainesville and won there before. Arkansas gets a major bounce back series as they win their first weekend series in three weeks.
Projected Record: 36-12 (12-9) SEC
4/29 @ Missouri State
Projected Record: 36-13
5/2-4 19.Texas
Arkansas renews its old rivalry against Jim Schlossnagle and Texas. Schlossnagle came over to Austin after leading Texas A&M to the College World Series Finals in 2024. Dave Van Horn’s Razorbacks have seen him as TCU’s head coach when they eliminated the Horned Frogs in the 2019 Fayetteville Regional and again four years later when TCU eliminated Arkansas from the 2023 Fayetteville Regional. Arkansas should take two of three from the Longhorns.
Projected Record: 38-14 (14-10) SEC
5/9-11 @ 3.LSU
Before losing to the Tigers on the road in Baton Rouge in 2023, the Razorbacks won the previous two series on the road against LSU. They look for their third series win inside Alex Box Stadium in their previous four attempts. I expect Jay Johnson’s team to not allow them to do this.
Projected Record: 39-16 (15-12) SEC
5/15-17 4.Tennessee
Dave Van Horn’s Arkansas team faces his former hitting coach Tony Vitello and the reigning national champion Tennessee to finish out the regular season. The Volunteers lost a lot of production offensively and on the pitching staff but like his mentor Van Horn, Vitello reloads too. A second consecutive series (last in 2023) win over Tony V’s Vols in Baum-Walker Stadium for the Razorbacks would be sweet and I think the Razorbacks can do it, helping themselves get to 17 wins in the SEC season.
Projected Record: 41-17 (17-13) SEC
5/20-25 SEC Tournament (Hoover)
A few wins in Hoover at the SEC Tournament will help the Razorbacks clinch another top eight seed in the NCAA Tournament for Dave Van Horn’s team.

2025 cbhsports Super Bowl LIX Preview

Sunday, February 9
Super Bowl LIX (Caesars Superdome (New Orleans))
1.Kansas City Chiefs vs. 2.Philadelphia Eagles
6:30 PM ET, FOX

Super Bowl LIX is just one day away. Will the Kansas City Chiefs be the first team to win three Vince Lombardi trophies in a row or will the Philadelphia Eagles avenge their Super Bowl LVII loss to the Chiefs just two years ago? The Eagles have a younger, much more equipped defense to stop Patrick Mahomes and his trusty tight end Travis Kelce and rookie speedster Xavier Worthy on the outside. Philadelphia’s defensive unit boasts linebackers Zack Baun, Nolan Smith Jr., Jalyx Hunt, and Nakobe Dean, defensive linemen Jalen Carter, Moro Ojomo, and Jordan Davis in its front seven. However, its secondary will be tested against Kelce and Worthy. Safeties Reed Blankenship and CJ Gardner-Johnson will have to help veteran cornerback Darius Slay and rookie Cooper DeJean at cornerback to prevent Patrick Mahomes from taking shots down the field. Eagles tailback Saquon Barkley has been their biggest addition during the 2024 season with veteran center Jason Kelce retiring at the end of 2023. Barkley’s 442 rush yards and 5 touchdowns helped Philadelphia get through the Packers, Rams, and Commanders in the NFC playoffs on their way to a third Super Bowl in six seasons. For lanes to be created for Barkley, quarterback Jalen Hurts’ will need to get the ball down the field for receivers AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, and tight end Dallas Goedert. Philadelphia has a major advantage in the ground game with Barkley but don’t count out the duo of Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt. I anticipate a similar game to Super Bowl LVII with the Eagles coming even closer to beating the Chiefs. But, something tells me Andy Reid’s team will not lose this game. Projected Score: Kansas City 28, Philadelphia Eagles 27

7.Michigan State 18-2 (9-0) Big Ten Next Up: @ USC (12-8) (Saturday, 4:30 PM ET, Peacock)
8.Tennessee 17-4 (4-4) SEC Next Up: 5.Florida (18-2) (Saturday, 12 PM ET, ESPN)
9.Marquette 18-3 (9-1) Big East Next Up: 25.Connecticut (15-6) (Saturday, 8 PM ET, FOX)
10.Purdue 16-5 (8-2) Big Ten Next Up: Indiana (14-7) (Friday, 8 PM ET, FOX)

Friday, January 31
Indiana (14-7) @ 10.Purdue (16-5)
8 PM ET, FOX
Indiana’s trip to Purdue begins a rivalry weekend of sorts with Kansas/Baylor, North Carolina/Duke, John Calipari’s return to Lexington to face Kentucky for the first time as Arkansas’ head coach, and Gonzaga/Saint Mary’s upcoming on Saturday as well. The weekend also includes old SEC rivals Florida/Tennessee and Auburn/Ole Miss matching up as well. Indiana’s trip to West Lafayette will be a difficult one. Junior guard Braden Smith has been playing at an All-Big Ten level, scoring over 15 points, dishing out almost 9 assists, and stealing the ball twice a game. As has the Boilermakers’ leading scorer, big man Trey Kaufman-Renn, who has replaced back to back national player of the year Zach Edey with 18 points and 6 rebounds a game. Arizona transfer Oumar Ballo will be Kaufman-Renn’s challenge up front, leading Indiana in scoring with 14.5 points and in rebounds at 10.2 a contest. Ballo is joined by three others averaging double digit points per game including forward Malik Reneau (13.1), forward Mackenzie Mgbako (12.5), and guard Myles Rice (12.1). All four of those guys must be on top of their games if they want to go on the road to one of the most difficult places to play in the country and beat their arch rival. Projected Score: Purdue 82, Indiana 70

Saturday, February 1
5.Florida (18-2) @ 8.Tennessee (17-4)
12 PM ET, ESPN
Tennessee comes into Saturday afternoon’s game against Florida losers of three out of their last four games and their last two against AP top 12 opponents. Coach Rick Barnes’ team also fell to Florida by thirty points on the road in Gainesville back on January 7. A common factor in the Volunteers’ losses is their inability to make perimeter shots consistently. Especially star Chaz Lanier, the former North Florida Osprey guard, who scored under his season average of 17 points with outbursts of just 10 and 15 points against 1.Auburn and 12.Kentucky the last two times out and posted three point percentages of 33% and 30% in those games. After falling to 4-4 in SEC play with the loss to the Wildcats at home on Tuesday night, the Volunteers continue their home stand with a chance to avenge their loss to the Gators. The Volunteers’ chances will be heavily reliant on the aforementioned Lanier and senior guard Zakai Ziegler (10 points, 2 steals, and 1 assist in their first game against Florida). Ziegler’s big game experience and 7-3 assist to turnover ratio this season serves them well in games like these, especially against Todd Golden’s terrific trio of guards. Walter Clayton Jr. is the obvious star out of the three, putting up almost 18 points and 4 assists game. Clayton Jr. scored just 7 points in his team’s blowout of Tennessee a few weeks ago. Florida Atlantic transfer Alijah Martin is not far behind his fellow backcourt mate in scoring putting up over 16 points a game and just above that number with 18 points against the Vols the first time. Finishing the trifecta on the perimeter is Will Richard who combined with Martin makes one of the best defensive duos on the perimeter in the country, as they combine to average almost four steals a game. Forwards Alex Condon posted an incredible stat line of 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocks against the Volunteers, too. So, if the Gators do the same thing they did last time they played Tennessee, watch out. I do think some things will be different with the game being in Knoxville but Kentucky just beat the Volunteers on their home court so why can’t the Gators? After crushing Georgia their last time out, I think Florida continues their season with a close win over Tennessee. Projected Score: Florida 81, Tennessee 77

20.Missouri (16-4) @ 14.Mississippi State (16-5)
1 PM ET, SECN
Mississippi State missed multiple opportunities to beat 4.Alabama on Wednesday night in Starkville but a second game in “The Dude” should help them bounce back against a quality Missouri team. Both the Bulldogs and the Tigers have flown under the radar in the loaded SEC but both teams have big wins to this point in the season to prove their worth. Mississippi State defeated then 18.Pittsburgh in the ACC/SEC Challenge before beating then 21.Memphis on the road in December. Missouri upset rival and then top ranked Kansas in December and then 5.Florida after conference play opened in January. The teams facing off in this one have underrated coaches in Mississippi State’s Chris Jans and Missouri’s Dennis Gates. Jans led the Bulldogs to an NCAA Tournament bid last season while Gates’ team struggled to not win an SEC game in 19 attempts through the SEC Tournament in Nashville. But, Gates’ team has been much better this season with five conference wins already on the season. The Tigers come in tied for third in the SEC with Florida (and have the tiebreaker with the aforementioned head to head win over the Gators) while Mississippi State is tied for tenth with 8.Tennessee at 4-4 in league play. For the players on the court for both of these teams, Mississippi State’s Josh Hubbard headlines the stars of this game. Hubbard put up a career high 38 points in their loss to the Crimson Tide this week. Going up against Hubbard fr0m the guard position is Tamar Bates who scores 13.3 points shooting an efficient 51.7% and 94.6% from the free throw line. Hubbard is joined by forwards KeShawn Murphy and Cam Matthews while Bates’ help will come from Anthony Robinson and former South Carolina big man Josh Gray. In what should be a phenomenal game in Starkville, Mississippi State needs a bounce back win and they will get it. Projected Score: Mississippi State 87, Missouri 85

1.Auburn (19-1) @ 23.Ole Miss (16-5)
2 PM ET, ESPN
Auburn has been the nation’s top team for the entire season. Through seven games in SEC play, the Tigers are undefeated in maybe the best version of the league ever. They boast the frontrunner for national player Johni Broome, who came back from injury against then 8.Tennessee last Saturday and played well in the victory. That did not compare to his performance on Wednesday night in their win over LSU. Broome put up 26 points, 16 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Bruce Pearl’s roster also includes Dylan Cardwell who helps Broome in the paint, guard Chad Baker-Mazara, guard Miles Kelly, and guard Tahaad Pettiford. The Tigers will get yet another test in the SEC when they travel on the road to face Ole Miss, who comes off of a home win against Texas on Wednesday. Former Virginia Tech guard Sean Pedulla leads the way for the Rebels in scoring at 14.5 points a game while fellow backcourt mates Jaylen Murray, Matthew Murrell, and Dre Davis help him outside. For Chris Beard’s team inside in the paint, forwards Malik Did and Jaemyn Brakefield remind me of his previous teams years ago at Texas Tech. Beard has constructed a team similar to Pearl’s at Auburn with depth on the perimeter and in the paint. It may not be to the level of the Tigers just yet but we will see on Saturday afternoon this measuring stick game for the Rebels as they look to build on their 5-3 record in league play. Projected Score: Auburn 85, Ole Miss 77

11.Kansas (15-5) @ Baylor (13-7)
4 PM ET, ESPN
Kansas and Baylor normally square off on the same day, leading up to the North Carolina-Duke rivalry game in early February. Kansas and Baylor have been the standard bearers in the Big 12, two of the winningest programs in the league and in the country, with the Bears winning a national title in 2021 and the Jayhawks following suite in 2022. Since, Kansas and Baylor have not been as good but they have made the NCAA Tournament and won a few games in March. Kansas had multiple six point leads in regulation against Houston and again in the first overtime before they lost to Houston at home last Saturday night. The Jayhawks bounced back with a win over UCF but a road trip to Waco is normally not as easy. The Bears fell to BYU on Tuesday in Provo, falling closer and closer to the bubble with a 13-7 (5-4) record in Big 12 play. A win against the Jayhawks could change their fortunes. Former Miami forward Norchad Omier leads the way for Baylor, scoring over 15 points and 10 rebounds a game. Freshman phenoms VJ Edgecomb, Rob Wright, and veteran Duke transfer Jeremy Roach make up what would be a dangerous eight or nine seed in the NCAA Tournament if Scott Drew’s team can win games down the stretch this season and make it there. In their way will be veteran big man Hunter Dickinson (16.3 points, 10 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks) South Dakota State transfer and Lawrence native Zeke Mayo (15.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3 assists), and veteran point guard Dajuan Harris (9.6 points, 5.8 assists, and 1.4 steals) know how to win big games like this. Kansas needs a win like this on the road against a rival and Bill Self’s team should get it. Projected Score: Kansas 83, Baylor 79

22.Texas Tech (16-4) @ 6.Houston (17-3)
6 PM ET, ESPN2
Texas Tech’s improvement in year 2 under head coach Grant McCasland has been noticeable with their rise into the AP top 25 and their 16-4 overall record and their 7-2 conference record, good enough tied for third in the Big 12 with 3.Iowa State, who they fell to in overtime a few weeks ago. A win for the Red Raiders would be huge with Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars undefeated in Big 12 play after a dominant performance against West Virginia, 63-49 putting an exclamation point on their win against Kansas on the road in Lawrence last Saturday night in double overtime. Texas Tech will need to play well on the road to beat Houston with quality play from JT Toppin, Elijah Hawkins, and the entire Red Raiders roster. On the other side, their defense will have to worry about an improved offense headed by LJ Cryer, Emanuel Sharp, J’Won Roberts, and Milos Uzan. Houston always has one of the better defense in the country as well. Like when Ole Miss hosts Auburn, Texas Tech’s trip to Houston will be a measuring stick game for Grant McCasland’s team when they face the Cougars on Saturday night. Projected Score: Houston 84, Texas Tech 75

North Carolina (13-9) @ 2.Duke (18-2)
6:30 PM ET, ESPN
North Carolina swept Duke last season the way to an ACC regular season title in Hubert Davis’ third season as head coach. Times have quickly changed as ESPN’s College GameDay comes to town again for the Tar Heels’ ten mile trip to Durham to face the Blue Devils. Many think Duke has their best chance to win a national championship since the 2021-2022 team that fell to the Tar Heels in the Final Four in Coach K’s final game ever. Led by the eighteen year old presumptive number one pick in the 2025 NBA Draft Cooper Flagg, the Blue Devils are favored to run through the ACC, build on their 10-0 record so far in league play, and sweep the Tar Heels like they did two seasons ago in 2023. Joining Flagg (20 points and 8 rebounds per game) is fellow freshmen Kon Knueppel (13 points), Khaman Maluach (8 points, 6 rebounds, 1 block), and veteran Australian guard Tyrese Proctor (10 points and 2 assists). Proctor has stepped into the lead guard role that Jeremy Roach left behind when he left for Baylor as has Flagg, who has come over to be a point forward at times during Duke’s success this season. Jon Scheyer’s team also has the experience of former Purdue forward Mason Gillis, who played in the national championship game with the Boilermakers last April. There is still one guy that played in the 2022 national championship game for Hubert Davis, whose job has been called for by many with his team’s lack of success in the weak ACC this season. Veteran guard RJ Davis is the name from the team that just fell short of a national title, scoring almost 18 points, 4 assists, and grabbing over one steal a game. Davis has not been the efficient All-American he was last season but he has been much better since the start of ACC play. He will need help from star freshman Ian Jackson (14 points) and Seth Trimble (12 points) on the perimeter and hope forward Jalen Washington (7 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 block) is healthy for their short road trip after missing Tuesday’s loss to Pittsburgh with an injury because without him Ven-Allen Lubin (6.1 points and 4.8 rebounds). North Carolina may keep it close in the first half, but Saturday night’s game between two old rivals on the “Tobacco Road” has “Blue Devil blowout”= written all over it. Projected Score: Duke 88, North Carolina 72

25.Connecticut (15-6) @ 9.Marquette (18-3)
8 PM ET, FOX
Dan Hurley’s UConn team has not been the same team it was when it won the last two NCAA Tournament National Championships. The Huskies face the team that has challenged them the most in the Big East, Shaka Smart’s Marquette Golden Eagles. They are 7-3 in league play and alone in fourth place in the Big East, two games back of 9.Marquette and 15.St. John’s at 9-1. Hurley’s Huskies have been without star freshman wing Liam McNeely since he sprained his ankle on New Year’s Day against DePaul. They played DePaul another time since McNeely’s injury and he remained out. If he does not play on this road trip to Milwaukee, UConn will need will need veteran forward Alex Karaban and veteran guard Hassan Diarra to lead the way against the Golden Eagles. Marquette’s Kam Jones has played at an All-American level scoring almost 19 points and dishing out over 6 assists per game. It will be up to Jones’ supporting cast including David Joplin and Stevie Mitchell to protect home court against the Huskies. A loss for UConn against Marquette puts them at a tough spot when it comes to their shot at a protected top four seed in March. The Huskies would have to win out for that fate at that point. Projected Score: Marquette 83, Connecticut 77

Gonzaga (16-6) @ Saint Mary’s (19-3)
11 PM ET, ESPN
Randy Bennett’s Saint Mary’s team again is pacing the West Coast Conference even without leaders on last year’s team like guard Aidan Mahaney (now at UConn) and forward Joshua Jefferson (now at Iowa State). Their first of two matchups against Gonzaga is huge for the Gaels with the first meeting being at home in Moraga. The Bulldogs started the season out well but faltered with losses in the Battle 4 Atlantis to West Virginia, in December to then 4.Kentucky, 18.UConn, 22.UCLA, and in conference to Oregon State and Santa Clara. The Gaels remain undefeated in West Coast Conference play and need to continue their winning ways against Gonzaga to make sure they keep a few game lead over the Bulldogs, which currently sits at a two game lead (9-0 to 7-2 entering Saturday night’s matchup). Without Mahaney and Jefferson, guard Augustas Marciulionis leads the way scoring almost 14 points and moving the ball, averaging almost 6 assists per contest. Joining Marciulionis, is Paullius Murauskas who almost matches him with 13 points and 9 rebounds a game. The biggest challenge in this game for the Gaels will be against Gonzaga’s length on the perimeter Mark Few’s team has not had in a while. Arkansas transfer Khalif Battle (12.7 points) joined veteran point guard Ryan Nembhard (11 points and 10 assists), guard Nolan Hickman (11 points) and sharpshooter Dusty Stromer (6 points). Inside for the Zags is the team’s leading scorer Graham Ike (17 points and 7 rebounds), Braden Huff (11 points), and Ben Gregg (11 points). The two games of the year in the West Coast Conference are always the two match ups between these two rivals and Saturday night’s edition in Moraga should not disappoint. Projected Score: Gonzaga 87, Saint Mary’s 85

College Football Playoff National Championship (Atlanta)
7.Notre Dame (14-1) vs. 8.Ohio State (13-2)
7:30 PM ET, ESPN
Notre Dame and Ohio State are set for a rematch from September 23, 2023 in the first ever 12-team College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday night. The Buckeyes defeated the Fighting Irish on a last-second run by former tailback Chip Traynaum from the one yard line, 17-14. The two midwest powers will battle on southeast battle grounds in Atlanta while the SEC will not have a national championship team for a second consecutive season. Texas’ defense slowed the Ohio State’s offense for the first time in the College Football Playoff, only allowing 21 offensive points by the Buckeyes. Tremendous freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith had only one catch for three yards in the win over the Longhorns so sophomore Carnell Tate (87 yards) and senior Emeka Egbuka (51 yards) made up for it in the victory. Running back TreVeyon Henderson quickly responded to Texas’ touchdown that tied the game 7-7 in the second quarter by taking a slip screen for 75 yards, and a touchdown that gave them the lead. The Buckeyes will need more production on the ground out of their tailbacks after Henderson and Judkins (2 touchdowns) only put up a combined 78 yards on the ground. If quarterback Will Howard can put up almost 300 yards passing, a score, and use his legs to get first downs against the Irish, they can succeed against a terrific Notre Dame man defense. The Fighting Irish secondary has been terrific all season but they were especially great in their win over Penn State in the semifinal round. With 33 seconds left in the game, sophomore cornerback Christian Gray picked off Nittany Lion signal caller Drew Allar to set up Mitch Jeter’s 41-yard field goal after Riley Leonard’s (268 yards, 2 TDs overall, and 1 INT in the game) yards ten yard pass to Jaden Greenhouse (105 yards and 1 TD) and two yard run. Notre Dame’s ground attack of Jeremiyah Love (1 TD) and Jadarian Price (59 combined yards) will have to help Leonard set up the down field pass against an Ohio State defense full of stars including Jack Sawyer, Caleb Downs, Sonny Styles, Cody Simon and JT Tuimoloau. Sawyer got to Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers and he stripped the ball out of his hands before he picked it up and ran it to the end zone to put the Buckeyes up 28-14 and claim their spot in the national championship. The Fighting Irish must protect Riley Leonard well so they can get a downfield passing game going, especially with Jaden Greenhouse being the only quality option down the field of late for their offense. Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman will face Ohio State, the team and school he played for as a student athlete attempting to win his first national championship. Ohio State’s Ryan Day is also looking for his first title and a win for him and his team on Monday night will take him off the hot seat talk Buckeye fans have him on. Projected Score: Ohio State 31, Notre Dame 14

Thursday, January 9
College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl (Miami Gardens)
6.Penn State (13-2) vs. 7.Notre Dame (13-1)
7:30 PM ET, ESPN
Penn State and Notre Dame square off in a match up of the unlikely in the College Football Playoff semifinals at the Orange Bowl. Notre Dame upset Georgia in the delayed Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, 23-10. The Fighting Irish’s quarterback Riley Leonard only threw for 90 pass yards and a score but he led his team in rush yards (80) in the victory over Georgia. They went on a 17-0 run against the Bulldogs between the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half after Jayden Harris brought the half’s opening kickoff to the house. Georgia’s defense held the Irish’s star running back, Jeremiyah Love to only 19 yards on the game. Al Golden’s defense made up for what Riley Leonard and the Notre Dame passing game by forcing two fumbles that helped them win the game by two possessions. Golden’s defense has been fantastic all season as has Tom Allen’s Penn State unit. Penn State’s roster is similar to Notre Dame’s in the fact that they rely on their run game and defense to win them games. Boise State signal caller Maddux Madsen threw three interceptions to the Nittany Lions in the Broncos’ season ending loss to Zakee Wheatley, Tyrece Mills, and Zion Tracy. Star pass rusher Abdul Carter was injured in the win but he is likely to play after head coach James Franklin said “There is nothing stopping him from playing” in his press conference this week. Tailbacks Kaytron Allen (134 yards) Nicholas Singleton (87 yards and a touchdown) helped their quarterback Drew Allar (171 yards and 3 TDs) with an efficient performance in their 31-14 win over the Broncos. A win for James Franklin’s team could be huge for him as he has never been considered a top coach in college football with his inability to win big games. But a third consecutive win in the first ever 12-team College Football Playoff would send shockwaves through the Big Ten with a potential match up against conference rival Ohio State or Texas in the national championship if their able to defeat the Fighting Irish. On the other hand, Marcus Freeman’s team’s ability to defeat Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs through the run game, defense, and special teams makes this game a hard one to pick. The first semifinal game in the 12-team College Football Playoff history should come down to the wire. Projected Score: Penn State 24, Notre Dame 21

Friday, January 10
College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic (Arlington)
5.Texas (13-2) vs. 8.Ohio State (12-2)
7:30 PM ET, ESPN
The Buckeyes and Longhorns will play on Friday in the College Football Playoff semifinals and then open the regular season on August 30th in Columbus against each other. Ohio State enters the Cotton Bowl playing their best football of the season over a month after a fourth consecutive loss to arch rival Michigan. Quarterback Will Howard (630 yards, 5 TDs, and 1 INT) and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith (290 yards and 4 TDs) combined for impressive stats in the first and quarterfinal rounds of the College Football Playoff against Tennessee and avenging their October 12th loss to Oregon. They have avoided turnovers with the help star studded of running back duo TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins. With the help of veteran receiver Emeka Egbuka, the Buckeyes offense has become almost unstoppable after putting up a combined 83 points in the first two games of the playoff against two tough defenses, Tennessee and Oregon. The Buckeye defense itself has been fantastic, holding the Volunteer and Duck offenses to a combined 38 points. Former Alabama safety Caleb Downs has been fantastic, putting up 10 tackles, three passes defended, and a forced fumble so far in the playoffs. Downs’ teammate and linebacker Cody Simon had 12 tackles and two sacks during their last two victories. Downs will have to watch out for Matthew Golden, who starred in the Longhorns double overtime win over Arizona State catching seven passes for 149 yards and a touchdown. Signal caller Quinn Ewers led his Longhorns on a long drive in the fourth quarter that put them up 24-8 on Arizona State. Following Ewers’ five yard score on the ground, Peach Bowl offensive MVP Cam Skattebo threw a 42-yard touchdown pass on a trick play from his tailback position to receiver Malik McClain. Skattebo adds a two yard touchdown to tie the game. After Texas place kicker Bert Auburn’s potential game winner bonks off the upright, the teams go to overtime. Skattebo scores another touchdown in the first overtime, Texas answers with a must get touchdown on 4th and 13 to Matthew Golden from Ewers. Ewers adds a 25-yard pass to tight end Gunnar Helm and pass on the two point conversion to Golden before the Sun Devils fail to score. The Texas defense succumbed to the Sun Devils’ momentum in the fourth quarter. They must get ready to be prepared for the Buckeyes’ offense led by Howard, Egbuka, Henderson, and Judkins. The Longhorns’ defensive backfield, headed by Jim Thorpe award winner Jahdae Barron, Michael Taaffe, and Andrew Mukuba is perfectly set up to limit Jeremiah Smith and Emeka Egbuka with the amount of talent. However, they will need help from their defensive line and linebackers, including Liona Lefau and Anthony Hill Jr. A loss by the Longhorns eliminates the SEC from the College Football Playoff and a slip up by the Buckeyes keeps Ryan Day from winning a national championship another season. If Texas can hold up against Jeremiah Smith and Emeka Egbuka down the field, they can stay in the game. Projected Score: Ohio State 35, Texas 24

Tuesday, December 31
College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the VRBO Fiesta Bowl (Glendale)
3.Boise State (12-1) vs. 6.Penn State (12-2)
7:30 PM ET, ABC/ESPN
Penn State looks to continue its momentum from its opening round one victory over SMU when they face Boise State in Glendale at the Fiesta Bowl. The Nittany Lions will look to build off of their performance against the Mustangs where tailbacks Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen combined for 160 yards and 3 touchdowns on 25 carries. Singleton and Allen will attempt to help their quarterback Drew Allar set up passes down the field to Mackey Award winning tight end Tyler Warren and receiver Harrison Wallace III. Pass rushers Abdul Carter and Kobe King had great success against the Mustangs and can do so against Boise State tomorrow night. To avoid the great pass rush, Boise State will rely Heisman runner-up Ashton Jeanty, who has rushed for almost 2,500 yards and 29 touchdowns on the season so far. Like Singleton and Allen, Jeanty will need to set up easier throws for his quarterback Maddux Madsen. The run game is the best attribute of both teams so the winner of this game should be the team that has the best game on defense. James Franklin’s defense played great a week ago and they will look to do the same again. Projected Score: Penn State 35, Boise State 20

Wednesday, January 1
College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl (Atlanta)
4.Arizona State (11-2) vs. 5.Texas (12-2)
1 PM ET, ABC/ESPN
Texas used a dominant ground attack with Jaydon Blue (146 yards and 2 TDs) and Quintrevion Wisner (110 yards and 2 TDs) to advance past Clemson in the first round. Next up for Steve Sarkisian’s team is a trip to Atlanta to face Big 12 champion Arizona State. The Sun Devils won the league in just their first season. They too rely on the play of their tailback, Cam Skattebo, who has rushed for 1,568 yards and 19 touchdowns. The winner of this game will combine their rush attacks with quality quarterback play. Both Longhorn signal-caller Quinn Ewers (2,867 yards, 26 TDs, and 10 interceptions) and Sun Devil signal-caller Sam Leavitt (2,663 yards, 24 TDs, and 5 interceptions) have been up and down this season. Whichever quarterback is better on New Year’s Day, their team should win the game. Ewers was without one of his favorite targets, Alabama transfer wide receiver Isaiah Bond, during the win over the Tigers. But, Sarkisian has optimism about Bond’s progress that he can return next to leading pass catcher Matthew Golden and tight end Gunnar Helm on the outside. The Sun Devil defense must step up against the Longhorns’ great running backs and receivers if they want to win this game. Defensive backs Myles Bowser (93 tackles, 4 passes defended, and 1 sack) and Xavion Alford (82 tackles, 4 passes defended, and 2 interceptions) will attempt to do just that as the leaders of the Sun Devil defense. Kenny Dillingham’s team has had a great season but I think it comes to an end at the hands of Texas. Projected Score: Texas 45, Arizona State 27

College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Rose Bowl presented by Prudential (Pasadena)
1.Oregon (13-0) vs. 8.Ohio State (11-2)
5 PM ET, ABC/ESPN
In a rematch of an October 12th battle in Eugene, Big Ten champion Oregon looks to get a second win over Ohio State in “the grandaddy of them all” in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl. After getting round one off, the Ducks have a challenging opponent in the Buckeyes, who they beat by just one point over two months ago. In that game, Dillon Gabriel passed for 341 yards, two touchdowns, and ran one in as well. Gabriel’s receivers Evan Stewart (149 yards) and Tez Johnson (75 yards) each caught one score while tailback Jordan James ran for over 100 yards and a touchdown as well. On the other side, Ohio State signal caller Will Howard (326 yards) matched Gabriel’s two passing touchdowns and he too got good production from his top two targets, Jeremiah Smith (100 yards and 1 TD) and Emeka Egbuka (93 yards and 1 TD). Howard attempted a long run on the last play from scrimmage in that game but time ran out as he slid down so the Buckeyes could not attempt a field goal. Since, the Buckeyes’ only loss was their fourth consecutive against Michigan before they dominated Tennessee to open the College Football Playoff. Receiver Jeremiah Smith turned in another 100+ yard and multiple touchdown performance while the defense only gave up 17 points to the Volunteers. Can Ryan Day’s team make the trip to the west coast and defeat Dan Lanning’s Ducks? We will certainly find out on Saturday night. Projected Score: Ohio State 38, Oregon 35

College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl (New Orleans)
2.Georgia (11-2) vs. 7.Notre Dame (12-1)
8:45 PM ET, ABC/ESPN
Notre Dame dominated the first three quarters of the first 12-team College Football Playoff game ever against instate foe Indiana and defeated the Hoosiers 27-17 to move onto the Sugar Bowl against Georgia. The Fighting Irish tailback relied on star tailback Jeremiyah Love carried the ball only eight times for 108 yards while his quarterback Riley Leonard threw just one touchdown and one interception. Jordan Faison led the Irish with 89 yards receiving while Jayden Thomas caught Leonard’s only touchdown. Their offense will have to be at its best against a confident Georgia defense, headed by defensive back Malaki Starks (73 tackles, 3 passes defended, and 1 interception) and linebacker CJ Allen (72 tackles, 4 passes defended, and 1 interception). Kirby Smart’s quarterback Carson Beck (3,485 yards, 28 TDs, and 12 INTs) is out for the season after injuring his right elbow in the first half of the Bulldogs’ 22-19 win over Texas in the SEC Championship game. In his place will be Gunnar Stockton, who led the Bulldogs to a win in the second half over the Longhorns after passing for 71 yards and an interception. Stockton must avoid turning the ball over against a Fighting Irish defense that is no pushover and rely on tailback Trevor Etienne, who rushed for 94 yards and two scores after coming back from injury in the SEC Championship game. Stockton must also trust his leading receiver Arian Smith and tight end Oscar Delp if they want to get the ball past linebacker linebacker Jack Kiser (69 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 pass defended) and safety Xavier Watts (60 tackles, 8 passes defended, and 6 interceptions). Georgia’s experience in the playoffs should help them in this game against Notre Dame but do not be surprised if it takes them awhile to get going with Gunnar Stockton as he makes his first start as the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback. Projected Score: Georgia 31, Notre Dame 21

Arkansas faces Texas Tech in yet another Liberty Bowl appearance

Friday, December 27
AutoZone Liberty Bowl (Memphis)
Arkansas (6-6) vs. Texas Tech (8-4)
7 PM ET, ESPN
Arkansas plays in the Liberty Bowl for the seventh time with a 3-3 record in the game overall in Memphis. The Razorbacks may be playing with many second and third stringers due to a mass exodus in the transfer portal. But, at least they are playing and are not opting out of this bowl game. These extra weeks of practice help for the 2025 season. The Razorbacks face Texas Tech, an 8-4 team out of the Big 12, who finished tied for the second best record in the league at 6-3. Arkansas leads the all-time series over the Red Raiders 29-8 ahead of their 38th meeting and first in a bowl game. Tech is led by head coach Joey McGuire, who took over in 2022 and has led his team to a 23-15 mark after coming over from rival Baylor, where he served as the associated head coach and coached the defensive line and linebackers. McGuire will put his undefeated record in bowl games on the line tomorrow when facing the Razorbacks, a team he grew up rooting for with season tickets to the games in Little Rock at War Memorial Stadium. On December 14th, it was announced Red Raider signal-caller Behren Morton will not play due to getting surgery on his throwing shoulder. It will be true freshman Will Hammond stepping in to lead their offense versus a Razorback defense that will be without defensive ends Landon Jackson, Nico Davillier, linebacker Brad Spence, defensive backs Jaylen Braxton, TJ, and Tevis Metcalf as they head to the NFL Draft or the transfer portal. Hammond will be without leading receiver Micah Hudson, tailback Quinten Joyner, and offensive linemen Kaden Carr, Ty Buchanan, Dalton Merryman, and Garrett Morphis as they exited to the transfer portal. Arkansas’ offense must hope it can get production out of second string playmakers as well but it will have starting quarterback Taylen Green for the showdown against Texas Tech in Memphis as well as for the upcoming 2025 season. Green will look to get the ball down the field to receivers Isaac TeSlaa, former MLB outfielder Monte Harrison, and Dazmin James. TeSlaa joins second string tailback Rodney Hill as the only two guys outside of Green who have played meaningful snaps on the Razorback offense expected to play on Friday night. Braylen Russell, Arkansas’ talented bowling ball running back entered the transfer portal twice before pulling out of it after reconsidering. He returned to bowl practices earlier this week and coach Pittman said he is in Memphis and will get a good load of action. Not having starter Ja’Quinden Jackson and the SEC’s leading receiver Andrew Armstrong as they prepare for the NFL Draft will hurt Sam Pittman’s team as will losing four starters on the offensive line. If Arkansas can keep this game close until the fourth quarter, they have a shot to win but if they can’t, Texas Tech could get a third straight bowl win for head coach Joey McGuire. Projected Score: Texas Tech 38, Arkansas 21

2024 cbhsports College Football Playoff First Round Preview

Friday, December 20
10.Indiana (11-1) @ 7.Notre Dame (11-1)
8 PM ET, ABC/ESPN
The Hoosiers head to face the Fighting Irish to set up an instate first round playoff game up north on Friday night. It should be chilly in South Bend on for the first, first round game in the 12-team format’s history. Curt Cignetti has led Indiana to a historic season in his first season since coming over from James Madison. Cignetti’s signal caller Kurtis Rourke (2,827 yards, 27 TDs, and 4 INTs) has been fantastic this season. His stable of running backs Justice Ellison and Ty Son Lawton, who have combined for almost 1,500 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns, will help him set up the passing game to receivers Elijah Sarratt, Omar Cooper Jr., and Myles Price. The Hoosiers’ defense has been terrific and dominant against subpar competition for much of the season (outside of the loss to Ohio State in November) but have a shot to prove themselves against a Notre Dame offense that improved throughout the season after a dud loss to Northern Illinois in week 2. Former Duke quarterback Riley Leonard has been a beneficiary of new offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock, who left LSU to coach the Fighting Irish after coaching Jayden Daniels to a Heisman Trophy last fall. He has passed for over 2,000 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions and rushed for 721 yards and 14 TDs. To avoid turnovers down the field by Leonard, Marcus Freeman’s team must rely on running back Jeremiyah Love who needs 51 yards to eclipse 1,000 on the ground along with 15 touchdowns. It will be big for one of receivers Beaux Collins, Jaden Greathouse, and tight end Mitchell Evans to step up as a go to receiver for Leonard as the top three targets have combined for only six touchdown receptions on the season. So, it will be up to the Fighting Irish defense, headed by linebackers Jack Kiser and Drayk Bowen to make things rough on Rourke and the Indiana offense to help them win the game. After Notre Dame’s Freeman signed a four-year contract extension, it would be hard to see them fall against an Indiana program that in its first season with a revamped roster. Projected Score: Notre Dame 21, Indiana 14

Saturday, December 21
11.SMU (11-2) @ 6.Penn State (11-2)
12 PM ET, TNT/MAX
After sneaking into the College Football Playoff, SMU heads to Happy Valley to face Penn State in another cold environment. The Mustangs do not have a win against a team ranked inside the College Football Playoff after failing to beat Clemson in the ACC Championship game. The committee still gave them an opportunity so the Mustangs must make the most of it. They face a Penn State team that appeared in the Big Ten Championship game. The Nittany Lions also lost their title game, but they did to number one ranked Oregon. Their run game is terrific with the two headed monster of Nicholas Singleton (838 yards and 7 TDs) and Kaytron Allen (822 yards and 6 TDs). They help their quarterback, Drew Allar get the ball down the field to tight end Tyler Warren (1,062 yards and 6 TDs) and receiver Harrison Wallace III (638 yards and 4 TDs). Safety Jaylen Reed has led the Nittany Lions with 79 tackles, 3 interceptions, 3 passes defended, and 1.5 sacks. He will look to intercept the passes of SMU signal caller Kevin Jennings. Jennings play has been awesome since taking over for Preston Stone at quarterback, throwing for over 3,000 yards, 22 touchdowns, but he has turned the ball over 8 times. Running back Brashard Smith (1,270 yards and 14 TDs) will look to help Jennings with the passing game, getting the ball down the field to Roderick Daniels Jr. and Key’Shawn Smith who have combined for over 1,100 yards and 8 touchdowns through the air. SMU’s defense will have a huge job dealing with Allar, Singleton, and Allen. They will look to do it with linebacker Kobe Wilson (110 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 interceptions, 2 passes defended, and 1 forced fumble) and safety Isaiah Nwokobia (86 tackles, 3 interceptions, 3 passes defended, and 0.5 sacks). Penn State’s James Franklin has struggled to win big games in his time in State College but a win to open the College Football Playoffs would simply shut everybody up in and around the program. Projected Score: Penn State 24, SMU 14

12.Clemson (10-3) @ 5.Texas (11-2)
4 PM ET, TNT/MAX
Can Texas bounce back after a second loss in the SEC Championship game to Georgia and beat Clemson. The Bulldogs were able to crush the Tigers to open their season so can the Longhorns do the same thing? The quarterback match up includes two gunslingers that played at Austin area high schools, Texas’ Quinn Ewers (Southlake Carroll) and Clemson’s Cade Klubnik (Austin Westlake). The duel between Ewers and Klubnik will have a huge impact on this game. Klubnik will have to avoid the phenomenal Texas pass rush, headed by linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. (90 tackles, 7.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 interception, and 1 pass defended) if he wants to get the ball down the field to receivers Antonio Williams, Bryant Wesco Jr., and TJ Moore. The production of tailback Phil Mafah (1,106 yards and 8 TDs) should help but the overpowering Texas defense will definitely be a challenge. Texas’ offense must play better than it has in its games against Georgia and play like it has in its other ten games so far this season at home when Clemson comes to town. Receivers Matthew Golden (738 yards and 8 TDs), Isaiah Bond (532 yards and 5 TDs), and tight end Gunnar Helm (611 yards and 5 TDs) make plays down field for Ewers while a trio of running backs including Quintrevion Wisner (863 yards and 3 TDs), Jaydon Blue (564 yards and 6 TDs), and Jerrick Gibson (342 yards and 4 TDs) help him in the backfield. Also, backup signal caller Arch Manning could see playing time, especially on running plays as he has already rushed for four touchdowns on the season. Dabo Swinney’s linebackers Barrett Carter, Wade Woodaz, and Sammy Brown all have over 70 tackles on the season and should make an impact in stopping for the Longhorn defense. Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorns should win this game but it will take them a half to fully get control of the game. Projected Score: Texas 35, Clemson 17

9.Tennessee (10-2) @ 8.Ohio State (10-2)
8 PM ET, ABC/ESPN
Tennessee’s trip to Columbus for a Saturday night showdown with Ohio State should be the best game of the first round of these playoffs. The Volunteers should be ready to go into the freezing environment and beat a Buckeye team that just lost to an underachieving Michigan team during Thanksgiving weekend, 13-10. Tailback Dylan Sampson has been the engine for the Volunteer offense this season, rushing for almost 1,500 yards and 22 touchdowns. Nico Iamaleava benefits from Sampson’s abilities, becoming a better passer throughout the season, throwing for over 2,500 yards and 19 touchdowns. Iamaleava’s receiving core of Dont’e Thornton Jr., Bru McCoy, Squirrel White, and Chris Brazzell II will look to help open things up for their quarterback against Ohio State’s defense, including safety Sonny Styles (76 tackles, 4 sacks, and 3 passes defended), linebacker Cody Simon (74 tackles, 5 sacks, and 5 passes defended), and safety Caleb Downs (61 tackles, 3 passes defended, and 1 interception). Nobody expects much out of Buckeye quarterback Will Howard (175 passing yards in loss to Michigan) or his running backs Quinshon Judkins (46 rushing yards) and TreVeyon Henderson (21 rushing yards) after their dismal performances against the Wolverines. They must prove that they are a team that can advance to win the national championship game by showing up for this game at their home stadium. Ohio State head coach Ryan Day must know that his team’s strength is passing the ball down the field to an awesome group of receivers, including Jeremiah Smith (934 yards and 10 TDs), Emeka Egbuka (743 yards and 9 TDs), and Carnell Tate (583 yards and 4 TDs). If the Buckeyes do not defeat the Vols, Ryan Day might be fired before he walks off the field on Saturday night. Projected Score: Tennessee 24, Ohio State 21

7.Florida (10-0) vs. North Carolina (6-4) (Charlotte; Jumpman Invitational)
7 PM ET, ESPN
Todd Golden’s Gators have raced out to a 10-0 record with key wins over Florida State, Wake Forest, Wichita State, Virginia, and Arizona State most recently on Saturday entering the Jumpman Invitational. Veteran guard Walter Clayton Jr. has been terrific this season, scoring over 18 points and pass out almost 4 assists per game. In addition, Florida Atlantic transfer Alijah Martin (15 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists) continues be the playmaker he was in Boca Raton as a Florida Gator. They face a North Carolina team that has underachieved in Hubert Davis’ fourth season in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels defeated Georgia Tech the weekend before last to open ACC play before taking down La Salle. The defense has regressed and the paint presence has been missing since Armando Bacot’s eligibility ended in March. Vanderbilt transfer Ven-Allen Lubin (6 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 block per game) and Jalen Washington (6 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 block per game) are not the bigs that Carolina needs to win games now in nonconference play, during ACC play, or when March comes around. RJ Davis has not been playing at the national player of the year level that he was last season but has still been scoring an average of 18 points a game. Davis’ backcourt mates Seth Trimble (16 points per game) and Elliot Cadeau (12 points a game) have both improved tremendously this season. It will be up to them to supply Davis in scoring against a Florida team that can do a lot of it. Projected Score: Florida 87, North Carolina 75

24.Michigan (8-2) vs. 14.Oklahoma (10-0) (Charlotte; Jumpman Invitational)
9 PM ET, ESPN
To end things in Charlotte, Michigan faces Oklahoma in a top fourteen match up. Dusty May’s Wolverines have been much better than expected through a month of the season. Michigan seven footers Danny Wolf and Vladislav Goldin’s two-man game is awesome to watch every game. Wolf, a point center, uses Goldin’s screens to set up the Michigan offense and pass the ball in the paint to get easy layups. Michigan fell to Arkansas in the Jimmy V Classic a week ago but are given another shot to take down an SEC team. Porter Moser’s Sooners is the team the Wolverines will face. After being picked to finish far down in the SEC by the media, Oklahoma has won the Battle 4 Atlantis, defeated Georgia Tech in the ACC/SEC Challenge, and took down their instate rival Oklahoma State on Saturday. They rely on forward Jalon Moore and guard Jeremiah Fears for much of their scoring. If Moore and Fears can continue their great play against Michigan, the Sooners will continue the SEC’s dominance in nonconference play. Projected Score: Oklahoma 84, Michigan 80

22.Dayton (9-2) @ 19.Cincinnati (8-1)
8:30 PM ET, ESPNU
Cincinnati has been one of the pleasant surprises in a Big 12 that will be full of NCAA Tournament teams in March. The Bearcats have slipped up just once this season, against Villanova in the Big 12-Big East Battle. Guards Simus Lukosius, Jizzle James, and forward Dillon Mitchell lead the way on a balanced team for Wes Miller. They get another shot to get a quality win against an instate opponent in Dayton, who placed seventh place in the Maui Invitational. Former Ohio State forward Zed Key is joined by guard Enoch Cheeks and forward Nate Santos lead Anthony Grant’s team. Their up and down pace makes them tough to beat. But, they will be challenged against a Cincinnati team that has the capability to finish in the top third of the Big 12. It should be a back and forth game between the Flyers and the Bearcats. However, Cincinnati should protect their home floor and win this game. Projected Score: Cincinnati 76, Dayton 70

North Carolina (6-4) vs. 18.UCLA (10-0) (New York City; CBS Sports Classic)
3 PM ET, CBS
After traveling just a few hours to Charlotte to play in the Jumpman Invitational, the Tar Heels will head to New York City for the CBS Sports Classic against UCLA. Mick Cronin’s team is 9-1, coming off of a win over old Pac-12 rival Arizona and their only slip up early in the season against New Mexico. Cronin’s roster is balanced as they play through three main guys. Forward Tyler Bilodeau scores over 13 points and grabs almost 6 rebounds a game while Eric Daily (12 points) and Sebastian Mack (11 points) serve as a strong backcourt for UCLA. The talented Bilodeau will serve as an important match up this season for the aforementioned Jalen Washington and Ven-Allen Lubin as the Tar Heels’ bigs look to improve. For Daily and Mack, defending North Carolina guards RJ Davis, Seth Trimble, Elliot Cadeau, and freshman Ian Jackson will be a chore in itself. If Carolina falls to Florida on Tuesday, another loss versus UCLA would mean six defeats on the season. For the Tar Heels to avoid that, they will need Washington and Lubin to play good minutes for them inside and hope that RJ Davis and one of his mates in the backcourt have a quality game beside him. I don’t know if the Tar Heels put it all together in this one but I think they will get closer as they beat the Bruins. Projected Score: North Carolina 77, UCLA 72

16.Purdue (8-3) vs. 2.Auburn (9-1) (Birmingham)
4:30 PM ET, ESPN
In what is the match up of the day on Saturday, Purdue will head to Birmingham to face Auburn in a neutral site game that will bring a lot of Tiger fans. The Boilermakers will look to sweep their contests against teams from Alabama after defeating the Crimson Tide the first week of the season by beating Auburn on Saturday night. They lost by eighteen points to Marquette following their win over the Crimson Tide but bounced back with wins over NC State in a Final Four semifinal rematch from last March and a win over another SEC team Ole Miss. Last Saturday, they lost to Texas A&M in Indianapolis but they can make up for that loss with a win in essentially a road environment in Birmingham with it being so close to Auburn’s campus. After losing back to back national player of the year Zach Edey to the pros, his replacement in the paint Trey Kaufman-Renn has been impressive, scoring almost 19 points and 7 rebounds per game. It is crazy to think guards Fletcher Loyer and Braden Smith are in their third year in Matt Painter’s program, both scoring 13 points a game. Both are terrific players that will be challenged by Bruce Pearl’s athletic guards, Chad Baker-Mazara (13.1 points per game), Tahaad Pettiford (11.3 points), and Miles Kelly (11 points). Those three look to get the ball inside to Johni Broome (19.6 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks), who leads the national player of the year race. The Tigers have been impressive this season with wins over Houston, Iowa State, North Carolina, Memphis, and Ohio State. Their one slip up was against Duke on the road at Cameron Indoor Stadium in the ACC/SEC Challenge. The match up between Broome and Kaufam-Renn will determine this game and Broome should win it. Projected Score: Auburn 87, Purdue 82

4.Kentucky (10-1) vs. Ohio State (6-4) (New York City; CBS Sports Classic)
6:30 PM ET, CBS
The second game in the CBS Sports Classic features an AP top five Kentucky team that has surprised many people in Mark Pope’s first season on the job and a solid Ohio State team, who also has a first year head coach in Jake Diebler. Pope’s team does not have a true number one scoring option but that means that the Wildcats have six guys that average over ten points a game. Guards Otega Oweh (15.6), Lamont Butler (12.9), Jaxson Robinson (12.5), forward Andrew Carr (11), and center Amari Williams (10.6) make the Wildcats hard to beat because you never know who will be playing their best basketball ever night. They have beaten then number six ranked Duke and then number seven ranked Gonzaga so far. For the Buckeyes, guards Bruce Thornton (16 points and 5 assists per game) and John Mobley Jr. (13 points) and forward Devin Royal (14 points and 7 rebounds) power their team. In addition, Diebler brought in two former SEC players including former South Carolina guard Meechie Johnson (10 points), in his second stint with the Buckeyes, and forward Aaron Bradshaw (8 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks a game) who will face his former Wildcats on Saturday night. I think this game may be close for thirty to thirty five minutes until Kentucky will break away at the end and win. Projected Score: Kentucky 85, Ohio State 77

Sunday, December 22
Illinois (7-3) vs. Missouri (9-1) (St. Louis; McBride Homes Braggin’ Rights)
1 PM ET, ESPN
A rivalry that is sometimes forgotten about because it is a game that is rarely played in football. Illinois and Missouri are two teams that had opposite results to end their seasons last April. The Fighting Illini made it all the way to the Elite 8 while Missouri lost all nineteen opportunities against SEC competition last winter and spring. This season has been different so far for Dennis Gates’ team. After losing their opener by just eight points against an improved Memphis team, Missouri has rattled off ten consecutive wins, most notably against border rival and then number one ranked Kansas in Columbia. This game against the Illini will be the Tigers’ last shot to improve their resumé before SEC play before they face the nation’s number two ranked Auburn Tigers on “The Plains”. Missouri must hope their guard trio of Tamar Bates (14 points a game), Caleb Grill (13.6 points), and Mark Mitchell (12.8 points and 5 rebounds) are up for the challenge against Brad Underwoods’ skilled roster. The Illini may just be 1-1 in the Big Ten and have just lost to top ranked Tennessee but they also have wins over then number 19.Arkansas and then number 20.Wisconsin. The perimeter shooting of the entire Illinois team is terrific but they love to play through guard Kasparas Jakucionis, who scores over 15 points, grabs 6 rebounds, and dishes out over six assists per game. The Lithuanian has turned into an NBA draft prospect quickly as has Tomislav Ivisic, the brother of Arkansas center Zvonimir Ivisic. Tomislav has put together a quality freshman season, matching Jakucionis scoring per game with 15 points, bringing down over 9 rebounds, blocking a shot per game, and shooting the ball from deep well. Missouri will have to get out on Illinois’ shooters if they want to win this game. The Tigers may do just that but the Fighting Illini’s percentage will make them hard to beat. Projected Score: Illinois 84, Missouri 77
