Arkansas releases full 2021-2022 non-conference slate

Arkansas released its full 2021-2022 non-conference slate on Monday. Here is everything we know about their slate so far:

11/9 Mercer
11/13 Gardner-Webb
11/17 Northern Iowa
11/22 Kansas State (Kansas City,MO) (Hall of Fame Classic)
11/23 Cincinnati/Illinois (Kansas City,MO) (Hall of Fame Classic)
11/28 Penn
12/1 Central Arkansas
12/4 Little Rock
12/7 Charlotte
12/11 Oklahoma (Tulsa)
12/18 Hofstra (North Little Rock)
12/21 Elon
TBA All conference games
1/29 West Virginia (Big 12/SEC Challenge)

Takeaways:
Arkansas will not play a true road game in their 2021-2022 non conference slate but will still be tasked with some difficult games. Arkansas will play both Central Arkansas and Little Rock, the first time ever that Arkansas will play two instate non conference games ever in men’s basketball. The next step should be seeing one of those two facing the Razorbacks in North Little Rock in Simmons Bank Arena. However, the Razorbacks will face Hofstra in North Little Rock the Saturday before Christmas. Playing Kansas State before a potential match up with Cincinnati or Illinois will make or break Arkansas’ November slate. Just two weeks later, the Muss Bus will head to Tulsa to face Oklahoma, led by new head coach Porter Moser. With how talented Arkansas is, fans should expect Arkansas to win all of their non-conference games outside of all of their “Power 6” opponents.

When the full Razorback schedule comes out with conference games, I will make an update post. I will preview and make all of my predictions for the Razorback men’s basketball 2021-2022 season, which will come out November 8, the day before their season tips off.

Bates joins Duren as Memphis commits (CBB News)

Hey guys, since college football returned today, I decided to make a college basketball news post. Here it is:

On Wednesday, Forward Emoni Bates joined big man Jalen Duren as Memphis commits and will join the program this year. Earlier this month, I wrote about Bates and Duren announcing they would skip their senior year and reclassify from 2022 to 2021. The once clear top two prospects in the class of 2022 are now ranked number four and five respectfully in the 2021 247Sports Composite. Bates chose Memphis over the G-League, Michigan State (where he was formerly committed to), and Oregon. Duren picked Memphis over the G-League, Kentucky, Miami, and the Australian NBL.

(Sorry guys there wasn’t much other than that. Make sure you are ready for my week 1 college football preview, coming out on Thursday :).

5 (interconference) Match-Ups to look out for this season:
1. 3.Clemson vs. 5.Georgia (Charlotte) (September 4, 7:30 PM ET, ABC)
Easily the most anticipated game of the season will be played in Charlotte on the opening Saturday of the season. Clemson sports new starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei who played two fantastic games in 2020 with Trevor Lawrence out with COVID-19. On the other side, JT Daniels enters his first full season as Georgia’s starter since transferring from home state USC. This game, however, is going to be determined on the defensive side of the ball. Georgia does have some questions on both sides of the ball, especially with star tight end Arik Gilbert not with the team but they have to replace many of their defensive backs. Clemson looks stronger on defense.
2. 11.Oregon at. 4.Ohio State (September 11, 12 PM ET, FOX)
Behind the game in Charlotte, Oregon-Ohio State is the second most anticipated game of the year. While Oregon is the most talented team in the Pac-12, especially defensively, Ohio State should dominate this game, as the Big Ten has done to the Pac-12 since the inception of the College Football Playoff. Expected starter CJ Stroud should lead the Buckeyes to a “W” at home.
3. 8.Cincinnati at. 9.Notre Dame (October 2, 2:30 PM ET, NBC)
On my birthday, Cincinnati faces Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish were a playoff team last season only to get stomped by Alabama. Cincinnati held a lead in the Peach Bowl for much of the game versus Georgia only to give it up in the fourth quarter. Thus, this game will be close.
4. 18.Iowa at. 7.Iowa State (September 11, 4:30 PM ET, ABC)
Iowa State was phenomenal last season. Will they back up their Big 12 runner-up season with a flop or will they win a Big 12 title? The Cyclone’s first big test comes at home versus instate rival Iowa. Iowa’s style of running the football, throwing it to the tight end, and having a gritty defense will definitely put the Cyclones up for a test.
5. 1.Alabama vs. 14.Miami (Atlanta) (September 4, 3:30 PM ET, ABC)
Of course, I had to include the reigning national champions here. Alabama comes off of yet another national championship, losing their starting QB (Mac Jones), two starting receivers (Heisman winner DeVonta Smith and Jaylen Waddle), and their starting running back (Najee Harris) to the NFL. Not to mention, Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian left to be the head coach at Texas. So, new offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien will be tasked with putting another talented offense together led by new starting QB Bryce Young, senior RB Brian Robinson and others. Miami QB D’Eriq King and the Hurricanes will have to be ready to face the Tide.

Why Notre Dame needs to go the ACC

The ACC needs to add Notre Dame as a full member to survive. With the latest moves in conference realignment (Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC), getting a “cash cow” like Notre Dame, who is already an affiliate (part) member of the conference.

Contractually, the Fighting Irish have to join the ACC. The only sports they do not play in the ACC in are football and hockey. Of course, they played in the ACC in football in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic last season. That worked out well, as Notre Dame made the ACC Championship Game en route to a College Football Playoff appearance. Notre Dame made more money playing in the ACC last season than playing as an independent. Anyone who thinks Notre Dame is going to join the Big Ten just because it makes sense regionally. The ACC Grant of Rights deal goes through 2036 and because of the ACC bylaws, leaving the ACC would forfeit any television revenue made for the school.

If Notre Dame agrees to join the conference full time, the reason would be is because the ACC would allow Notre Dame to choose the school joining them, making the conference even again. Baylor, Kansas, Navy, West Virginia, and others come to mind.

The one that comes to most people’s minds is West Virginia. The Mountaineers joining would rekindle their “Backyard Brawl” rivalry as well as it being a perfect regional fit. But, adding West Virginia wouldn’t make sense for the ACC just because the move does not add much to the conference.

It is highly unlikely that Notre Dame would pick any of the old Big 12 schools such as Baylor or Kansas.

But an old rival like Navy makes sense for the conference. While new TV markets don’t matter as much in this round of realignment, returning the Washington DC television market would only be beneficial. It would create a clear rivalry for Notre Dame, someone they can play during Thanksgiving weekend. Plus, adding the Army-Navy game every year will make the ACC even more revenue. Here is what the ACC could look like in football with Navy and Notre Dame:

North
Boston College
Louisville
Navy
Notre Dame
Pittsburgh
Syracuse
Virginia
Virginia Tech

South
Clemson
Duke
Florida State
Georgia Tech
Miami
North Carolina
North Carolina State
Wake Forest

Moving to regional divisions benefits the ACC when it comes to eliminating long travels. The north division, outside of Navy and Virginia is essentially an old Big East. Clemson will likely own the football in the south division but will have to go through Florida State, Miami, and North Carolina.

Top 2022 talents Bates, Duren to skip senior years

The consensus top two players in the 2022 247sports 150, forward Emoni Bates and big man Jalen Duren are both moving forward in reclassifying to 2021. Although both reclassifications are not “officially official”, both are down to their final schools. Duren is down to Kentucky, Memphis, Miami, the NBA G-League, and the NBL. Bates is down to Memphis, Michigan State (where he is formerly committed to), NBA G-League, and Oregon. Many think the two could team up at the next level as both played for Team Final, the same AAU team this summer at either Memphis or the G-League.

Huge college basketball games are coming up this season as we are 98 days away from this season. Gonzaga and UCLA are set for a rematch of their awesome Final Four game on November 23. The Zags will also face Duke three days later on November 26.

Top 2022 QB Ewers to skip senior year, enroll at Ohio State

As most expected, Quinn Ewers announced today via twitter that he would be skipping his senior year at Southlake Carrol (TX) HS. The top rated player according to 247sports is set to enroll at Ohio State and enroll for fall camp that begins tomorrow in Columbus. He is now the number one player in 247sports’ 2021 player rankings following his reclassification. The highly-touted QB committed to Ohio State on November 19 following a decommitment from Texas. He will be able to profit off his name, image and likeness as an Ohio State quarterback, something he would not have been able to do if he remained in high school due to Texas’ recent state legislation on NIL. Since being rated as one of the only 1.0000 in 247sports composite history and the highest rated since former Texas QB Vince Young, he and Southlake Caroll lost to fellow QB Cade Klubnik (no. 32 ranked player in the 2022 247sports composite) and Austin Westlake in the Texas State Championship last season. Klubnik also defeated Quinn Ewers at the Opening and Elite 11, taking the title from him there. But, even if he loses those competitions and games, it is hard to worry as an Ohio State fan. In addition to Ewers redshirt freshmen CJ Stroud and Jack Miller and true freshmen Kyle McCord make up one of the most talented QB rooms just based off of recruiting rankings in college football history. It is not expected that Ewers will see playing time let alone start in 2021, just to start the learning curve of becoming a college quarterback.

Would a ACC/SEC merger or a merger Big Ten/Pac-12 work better?

Hey guys welcome back to yet another conference realignment post. Before we get into this post, I want to say this is a conduction of an experiment and to be looked at as nothing more. So, let’s get into what these mergers would look like!

In college basketball, the ACC/Big Ten challenge and Big 12/SEC challenge are headliner events in the sport. But, with the Big Ten/Pac-12 Rose Bowl alliance and many SEC/ACC Thanksgiving weekend rivalries, there are more similarities between each of the pairs in football, then their basketball counterparts.

Here is a look at the proposed ACC/SEC merger:

Oklahoma
Missouri
Texas
Texas A&M

Old Big 12 foes here.

North
Arkansas

Ole Miss
Mississippi State

Old rivalries are continued.
