Aaron Rodgers shows up at Green Bay training camp

Aaron Rodgers has returned to Green Bay Packers this morning. The MVP returned to work for the first time since his postgame interview following their loss to Tampa Bay in the NFC Championship Game.

By showing up on Tuesday, when veterans were mandated to report for training camp, Rodgers will avoid the $50,000 daily fine for missing camp-related events. Rodgers skipped all off-season activities, including the mandatory minicamp in June. The team could fine him more than $93,000 for missing that.

Just because Rodgers reported doesn’t necessarily mean he will practice when the team hits the field for the first time Wednesday. It’s possible he and the team will agree that he should sit out until the final details are ironed out.

That makes the 2021 a possible last-dance situation for Rodgers in Green Bay, as there has been gripe between him and the franchise since the team picked his replacement in the 2020 NFL Draft, Jordan Love.

2021 cbhsports Super Bowl LV Preview

Super Bowl LV
Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Raymond James Stadium (Tampa,FL)
Sunday, February 7, 5:30 PM CT
CBS

Tomorrow, right now, Super Bowl LV (55), will be kicking off. Mahomes versus Brady. Hill and Kelce versus Evans, Godwin, Brown, and Gronkowski. A decent Chiefs defense versus a young, talented Bucs defense. Many say that if Patrick Mahomes loses to Tom Brady, “He will never be the G.O.A.T.” I disagree with this statement because Mahomes, if he plays half as long of a career as Tom Brady, will have so many chances to win Super Bowls and prove that he is the greatest player of all time. For me projecting (or even predicting) this game, many do not remember when Tyreek Hill caught seven passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns against this Bucs defense. Not to mention Patrick Mahomes’ 462 passing yards, leading them to a 27-24 week 12 win. Tom Brady, despite struggling a bit in three consecutive road wins over Washington, New Orleans, and Green Bay has gotten to his tenth Super Bowl. The Bucs defense has improved a lot since their week 12 loss to the Chiefs, in large part due to improved front seven play and the secondary not letting elite receivers like Terry McLaurin (WAS), Michael Thomas (NO), and Davante Adams take over games too much. Their week 12 battle was a 27-24 win for the Chiefs, so this is a real toss-up for me. While I cover mostly college sports now, the NFL is not a foreign thing to me, I watch every Sunday. But at the end of the day, I had to go with my gut. Projected Score: Kansas City Chiefs 38, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 34

Each team will play once at home and once on the road. Leave your thoughts on this in the comment section.

Headlines from around the sports world (College Basketball, College Football, NBA, NFL)

Tomorrow’s post:The NBA’s restart calendar

Today I’m going to try something new. I will discuss two to three headlines from college basketball, college football, the NBA, and the NFL.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL-

The top available guard on the transfer market, former Florida guard Andrew Nembhard, is going to play and continue his education in Spokane at Gonzaga this fall. Nembhard chose the Zags over Duke, Georgetown, Memphis, Stanford, and USC. Nembhard started all 67 games the past two seasons for Florida and averaged 11.2 points, 3 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game last season. While Nembhard will have to sit out this season due to transfer rules, he is expected to replace elite Gonzaga signee Jalen Suggs, as he likely goes to the 2021 NBA Draft next year.

In ESPN’s first ever 2023 rankings, dubbed the 2023 ESPN 25, talented point guard DJ Wagner was ranked number one. A YouTube highlight video in himself, Mikey Williams debuted ranked number three. And the son of LeBron James, LeBron “Bronny” James Jr., debuted at number twenty-four.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-

This may not just be college football news, but it’s important. John Swofford will retire as ACC Commissioner after the 2020-2021 academic and athletic year. Swofford will step down after 24 years, making him the longest tenured commissioner ever to hold the ACC job.

Mississippi State Running Back Kylin Hill has made a statement. The star running back stated in a tweet earlier this week that, “Either change the (Mississippi) flag or I won’t be representing this state anymore & I mean that.. I’m tired.”

NBA-

Legendary former North Carolina wing and longtime NBA wing Vince Carter officially announced his retirement Thursday. At 43 years old, Carter announced his retirement after a 22-year career.

Lakers Guard Avery Bradley has announced he will opt out and not play in the NBA’s Orlando restart. A former teammate of Lakers star LeBron James, free agent guard JR Smith, has emerged as the lead candidate for the vacant spot on LA’s roster.

Mavs Center Willie Caluley-Stein has opted out of the NBA’s restart. To fill the open spot, Dallas is expected to sign Guard Trey Burke.

NFL-

The NFL has advised its teams to expect an on time start to training camps come July. Most players on most teams will report to camp no later than July 28.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame cancelled the NFL’s opening pre-season game between the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers due to the ongoing coronavirus. The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement has also been postponed.

cbhsports 2020 NFL Mock Draft

I’m going to pick every first round pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. I also think it’s worth noting Rob Gronkowski is back in the NFL with Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hope y’all enjoy. Check out my mock draft on YouTube (with the first ten picks) here:

1.Cincinnati Bengals
Joe Burrow,QB,LSU
Burrow tore apart college football in 2019. But it’s the it factor that makes Burrow the easy top pick.

2.Washington Redskins
Chase Young,DE,Ohio State
Despite the Redskins talent on the front seven, making the pick for Young, easily the best player in the draft overall, could make the Redskins a contender in a who knows NFC East.

3.Detroit Lions
Jeffrey Okudah,CB,Ohio State
Trading All-Pro Corner Darius Slay magnifies a big weakness now on Matt Patricia’s team. Okudah is an athletic corner that rose to the top defensive back list in the draft with excellent play on OSU’s defense.

4.New York Giants
Jedrick Wills,OT,Alabama
While the Giants could trade down, getting a Nick Saban coached offensive lineman would be great to protect young QB Daniel Jones.

5.Miami Dolphins
Tua Tagovailoa,QB,Alabama
Back to back members of the Crimson Tide are picked. Yes there are… MAJOR injury concerns for Tua and they could take Oregon’s Justin Herbert or trade down and tank for Clemson phenom Trevor Lawrence (or Ohio State’s Justin Fields) next April but if they’re taking anybody I think they take it slow and easy with the talented Tagovailoa.

6.Los Angeles Chargers
Justin Herbert,QB,Oregon
Despite not having many concerns coming out, similar to Tua, I think the Chargers take it slow with Herbert as they do have a solid starter already in Tyrod Taylor. But if Tagovailoa is picked at fifth, Herbert goes to LA here.

7.Carolina Panthers
Isaiah Simmons,LB/S,Clemson
Simmons fits the bill for new head coach Matt Rhule (former Baylor head coach). A position-less freak of an athlete. Simmons will step in and likely start his rookie season.

8.Arizona Cardinals
Derrick Brown,DT,Auburn
Brown is the best player on the board here. And if the Cardinals aren’t careful, playoff contenders San Francisco and Seattle will run it down their throat.

9.Atlanta Falcons
CJ Henderson,CB,Florida
With Desmond Trufant in Detroit now (oh and Drew Brees hasn’t gone to the booth at NBC yet), Henderson makes the most sense with this pick.

10.Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Tristan Wirfs,OT,Iowa
If you’re going to win games with Tom Brady, they’re going to need to make picks like this.

11.New York Jets
Mekhi Benton,OT,Louisville
If the Jets pick this athletic offensive lineman, theJets QB Sam Darnold and RB Le’Veon Bell may smile on draft night.

12.Las Vegas Raiders
CeeDee Lamb,WR,Oklahoma
Lamb leads a loaded wide receiver group at Oklahoma. And Jon Gruden needs a receiver for whichever QB he’s catching from (whether that be Mariota or Carr or someone else).

13.San Francisco 49ers
Jerry Jeudy,WR,Alabama
Coming into the season, I had Jeudy as a top three pick. While his stock might have dropped, the 49ers will have their choosing of Alabama wide receivers (Jeudy or Henry Ruggs). But my pick for the 49ers gives them another long, tall receiver for Jimmy Garappolo to throw to.

14.Cleveland Browns
Andrew Thomas,OT,Georgia
QB Baker Mayfield needs a rebound season. What better than to get an offensive linemen to help him.

15.Denver Broncos
Henry Ruggs,WR,Alabama
Ruggs is a speedy wide receiver. New QB Drew Lock needs some guys to throw to. Ruggs is the perfect pick here.

16.Jacksonville Jaguars
Javon Kinlaw,DT,South Carolina
The Jags pick Kinlaw to replace the production of All-Pro defensive linemen Calais Campbell and Marcell Darius.

17.Dallas Cowboys
K’Lavon Chaisson,LB/DE,LSU
I considered Chaisson’s teammate WR Justin Jefferson but replacing Robert Quinn’s 11.5 sacks is going to be harder than the Cowboys might think. Cowboys take Chaisson with this pick.

18.Miami Dolphins
Austin Jackson,OT,USC
Not too early to get the injury prone Tua Tagovailoa some protection.

19.Las Vegas Raiders
Jordan Love,QB,Utah State
Jon Gruden might have two decent starting quarterbacks in Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota but why not draft young-in who can compete?

20.Jacksonville Jaguars
Justin Jefferson,WR,LSU
While I would love to slot Jefferson with my Cowboys, to be second year QB Gardner Minshew needs more than just speedster DJ Chark to throw to. If not, the Jags will likely be in the Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields sweepstakes next April.

21.Philadelphia Eagles
Tee Higgins,WR,Clemson
This past season it became very apparent that with experienced wide receiver Nelson Agholor on the move and Alshon Jefferey pretty much gone, Philadelphia needs and gets a long tall receiving option with this pick.

22.Minnesota Vikings
Jaylon Johnson,CB,Utah
With Xavier Rhodes, Trae Waynes and Mackenzie Alexander all gone, Mike Zimmer needs to find some kind of replacement.

23.New England Patriots
Kenneth Murray,LB,Oklahoma
If the Pats don’t trade up for a QB, then why not go with a leader that will (try) to replace the leadership and game management of Tom Brady.

24.New Orleans Saints
Patrick Queen,LB,LSU
The Saints need some help when defending the top offenses in the NFC (49ers, now the Bucs with Brady, etc.), so they go with a guy in Queen that is less than an hour down the road at LSU.

25.Minnesota Vikings
AJ Epenesa,DE,Iowa
Needing to replace veteran Everson Griffen, the Vikings take a guy that can get around blockers easily in Epenesa.

26.Miami Dolphins
Xavier McKinney,S,Alabama
Why not bring in McKinney, one of Tagovailoa’s teammates at Alabama, to help out their defense?

27.Seattle Seahawks
Yetur Gross-Matos,DE,Penn State
With the questionable return of Jadeveon Clowney, Gross-Matos makes for a perfect pick for Pete Caroll.

28.Baltimore Ravens
Cesar Ruiz,C,Michigan
With Lamar Jackson’s offensive line losing some to retirement and getting up there in age, Ruiz makes the most sense for this pick.

29.Tennessee Titans
AJ Terrell,CB,Clemson
Terrell gets picked up here to help a star-studded Titan secondary.

30.Green Bay Packers
Josh Jones,OT,Houston
Jones is picked for obvious reasons. He’s another guy that can come in and help protect veteran QB Aaron Rodgers. I considered a wide receiver here but that can wait until the second round for the Pack.

31.San Francisco 49ers
Trevon Diggs,CB,Alabama
With Richard Sherman getting up there in age, the athletic Alabama corner can come in and make his name known in a decent 49ers secondary while getting mentored by Sherman.

32.Kansas City Chiefs
Jeff Gladney,CB,TCU
My friend Ted is a diehard Chiefs fan. And he said they need some defensive help. So, I go with the best corner on the board to finish the mock draft.

ESPN’s top prospect Jalen Green skipping college ball, to play in NBA G-League

The top ranked prospect in the 2020 ESPN 100, Five-Star Shooting Guard Jalen Green, will not play college basketball next season. The California native has been informing teams that he will likely play next season in the NBA Developmental League, the NBA G-League per bleacher report. Green will make an official announcement (I’m writing this the morning before he makes his official announcement) at 12 PM CT which will confirm his decision. If he were to go to college, he would’ve decided between Auburn, Memphis, and home state USC.

Ranking landing spots for QB Cam Newton

4.Buffalo Bills
Buffalo might already have Josh Allen as a longterm starter but the Bills would be fine overpaying for a QB2 that could potentially take over as their starter. Plus, Newton worked alongside Sean McDermott and GM Brandon Beane.

3.Las Vegas Raiders
Everyone knows Cam Newton can step up and take the starting spot in Las Vegas over two tenured QBs, Derek Carr and Marcus Mariota. But I don’t know if it’s the best fit for Cam.

2.Los Angeles Chargers
Tyrod Taylor is not a guy that’s going to stay longterm as a starting QB. But why not get a former NFL MVP if you’re Los Angeles?

1.New England Patriots
If Bill Belichick is upset with New England’s QB room (young QBs Jarrett Stidham and a potential drafted QB plus veteran QB Brian Hoyer), he can choose to go after Newton who seems to be a good fit for the Patriots.

Cowboys use exclusive franchise tag on QB Prescott

The Dallas Cowboys have placed the exclusive franchise tag on QB Dak Prescott the team announced Monday. That said, Dallas wants to ink a long term deal with Dak at some point. With the exclusive tag, Dak can’t talk with other teams. NFL Fantasy Football 2018: Four rookies who could make an impact in their first pro season (These are the rookies you want to draft) (Baker is not included in this list)

(these are in no order)

1.Saquon Barkley, RB, New York Giants
Saquon is already a top-five fantasy running back, and may be the next star in the big apple. If he keeps his head right,a rookie (like Barkley) could lead the NFL in the rushing yards for the third straight year (Elliott,Hunt).

2.Rashaad Penny, RB, Seattle Seahawks
There may be a few running backs in font of him but Penny has top end speed and could be a key RB2 sleeper if no one takes him in your draft.Penny should get some playing time, make the most of it,and make you happy when your fantasy team wins because of it.

3.Calvin Ridley, WR, Atlanta Falcons
Playing beside superstar wideout Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu (not a superstar but a quality wideout),no one should be payinga attention to Ridley. This should give him opportunity to have some big fantasy numbers.

4.Hayden Hurst, TE, Baltimore Ravens
Hurst is clearly the top tight end in this draft class, and can make an impact whether it be veteran Joe Flacco or rookie Lamar Jackson throwing it to him.Hurst will be a good blocker too,not that its’ good for fantasy or anything.

My way too early Super Bowl Champion pick

I know I don’t talk much about the NFL,but here is my way-too early super bowl champion pick and why.

My pick: Minnesota Vikings

Why: Minnesota brings back the best if not he second best defense in the NFL behind Jacksonville.Case Keenum was a good quarterback but is now in Denver and shouldn’t repeat those numbers in the Rockies.GettinG Kirk Cousins (who should be a good fantasy QB) and a good leader is very much an upgrade and should be able to go head to head versus Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. They should be able to plit the season series against Green Bay,and get a one or two more than them, getting them into the divisional round. From there, their defense and Kirk Cousins’ composure will win them the Super Bowl.
