NCAA makes minor changes to “NET” evaluation tool (CBB News)

Former Arizona State Forward Romello White is headed to Ole Miss per ESPN. White averaged 10.2 points and 8.8 rebounds last season.

Purdue transfer Nojel Eastern is staying in the Big Ten. The guard chose Michigan over many other offers. He averaged almost 5.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.

The NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET), which is used to evaluate teams for the NCAA College Basketball Tournament, has been changed a little bit. Two new components to the metric are Team Value Index (TVI) and adjusted efficiency. Both metrics will replace winning percentage, adjusted winning percentage, and scoring margin. Both men’s and women’s college basketball will use this up to date NCAA Evaluation Tool.

Five-Star Forward Greg Brown commits to Texas (CBB News)

Ranked number nine in the 2020 ESPN 100, Forward Greg Brown made his college announcement on Friday. The McDonald’s All American selection chose hometown Texas over Auburn, Kentucky, Memphis, Michigan, or the NBA G-League for a year. Brown heads to Texas just like his dad before him, who played football for the Longhorns.

Many consider center Matt Haarms the top available tansfer. The former Purdue big man committed to play his final season at BYU on Friday. Haarms chose BYU over Kentucky and Texas Tech after being contacted by 25 plus schools when he entered his name into the portal.

Another top international big man Daniel Batcho has committed to Arizona. Batcho posted plus twenty points and plus ten rebounds in many big games.

What to make of Jalen Green’s decision to go to the NBA G-League

Here’s what to make about consensus top three prospect Jalen Green’s decision to forgo college basketball (whether that be at Auburn and Memphis) and go to the NBA G-League.

First, things first. The G-League has become a great option recently for top prospects. Spend a year in the developmental league and then move on to the real thing. Playing basketball and being paid in the G-League has to be a more enticing option for Green, considering the uncertainty of schools opening on time and thus the start of the college basketball season.

A big con for Green’s G-League decision is that he doesn’t get the exposure that players like Zion Williamson and Trae Young, got to turn into top five picks in the NBA Draft. Players like Williamson got to be on national television at least thirty times during their lone seasons playing college basketball. Plus everyone watches them for three weeks in March.

It’s a tough hit for Penny Hardaway’s program at Memphis. Memphis is far removed from their top ranked class in 2019. Hardaway’s plan was to pair Green with fellow uncommitted top ten prospect Greg Brown. But all signs point to Brown staying home and signing with Texas. Bruce Pearl and Auburn have had a successful 2020 recruiting cycle so its nothing more than a guy they lost to another team or school.

Jalen Green’s decision is made even bigger considering the fact that next year’s recruiting cycle (the 2021 class) is widely considered the last class with “one and done” rule in place. The NCAA will make changes that will likely take high school basketball back to a place where top prospects can enter the NBA after their senior years in high school. College basketball will be greatly effected by this but that’s for another post.

UNC’s Anthony to enter 2020 NBA Draft (CBB News)

North Carolina standout freshman point guard Cole Anthony announced he is entering his name into the 2020 NBA Draft. Anthony averaged 18.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4 assists per game. That is the highest of any Tar Heel since Forward Tyler Hansbrough (20.7 PPG) in the 2008-2009 season. Anthony is a likely lottery pick.

Considered the top international prospect headed the college way, guard Kerr Kriisa announced he is headed to Arizona. Kriisa played in Lithuania’s NKL this season and averaged 14.8 points and 6 assists per game this season.

San Diego State Point Guard Malachi Flynn has used him and his team’s breakout season in 2019-2020 to declare for the 2020 NBA Draft. Flynn averaged almost 18 points and 5.1 assists per game in 2019-2020.

George Washington transfer Forward Arnaldo Toro is playing for Mike Anderson next season. Toro signed with St. John’s on Thursday. Toro averaged 6.5 points and a team high 7 rebounds per game for George Washington last season.

Rhode Island transfer Jacob Toppin, the brother of consensus national player of the year Obi Toppin, is transferring to Kentucky. Obi, the former Dayton Forward, has declared for the draft. Toppin averaged 5.1 points and almost 4 rebounds per game this past season.

ESPN’s top prospect Jalen Green skipping college ball, to play in NBA G-League

The top ranked prospect in the 2020 ESPN 100, Five-Star Shooting Guard Jalen Green, will not play college basketball next season. The California native has been informing teams that he will likely play next season in the NBA Developmental League, the NBA G-League per bleacher report. Green will make an official announcement (I’m writing this the morning before he makes his official announcement) at 12 PM CT which will confirm his decision. If he were to go to college, he would’ve decided between Auburn, Memphis, and home state USC.

Five-Star Todd decommits from Michigan, will head to play overseas (CBB News)

Five-star big man Isaiah Todd decommitted from Michigan this week. His plan is to go overseas and play professional basketball there before likely declaring for the 2021 NBA Draft next summer.

Former Ohio State guard Luther Muhammad is transferring to Arizona State. Muhammad will have to sit out the 2020-2021 season if he is not granted a waiver by the NCAA.

Florida leading scorer Keyontae Johnson has taken his name out of the 2020 NBA Draft and will return to Gainesville next fall. Johnson averaged 14 points per game and seven rebounds per game during his sophomore season.

The number two shooting guard in the 2020 ESPN 100, Josh Christopher announced his commitment to Arizona State over Michigan and UCLA.

Where does five-star Josh Christopher end up?

Ranked number ten in the 2020 ESPN 100, Five-Star Shooting Guard Josh Christopher is one of the lone 2020 prospects that has not signed. He ends his long recruitment with a decision today. Also to note, even if Christopher makes his decision before 2 PM CT (when this post goes up), I’ve been working on the post way before then. Anyway let’s take a look at the contenders to land Josh Christopher.

Arizona State:I’m sure Coach Bobby Hurley wants him to come to Tempe but even with Christopher’s brother playing there, it seems unlikely. It might be the second closest to home for him (he’s from California) but again, the Sun Devils seem like their third in the running at this point.

Michigan:Michigan Head Coach Juwan Howard started recruiting Christopher the minute he walked into Ann Arbor. Howard helped Michigan get to be the definite favorite to land his services and it may not be close.

Missouri:Missouri doesn’t belong here. After searching reliable source articles, there is nothing mentioned about how the tigers will land Christopher.

UCLA:UCLA was the early favorite to land Christopher. Once Forward Shareef O’Neal transferred to LSU, the UCLA coaching staff stopped recruiting Christopher heavily, so they could be called a “far away” second place in the race for Josh Christopher.

Prediction:I’m going with Michigaan because they have been committed to him most since Juwan Howard was named head coach.

Iowa’s Garza enters draft, but keeps elgibility (CBB News)

Iowa All American Center Luka Garza announced he is entering his name into the draft but keeping his elgibility by not signing with an agent. He would be a senior if he returns next season.

Ranked number one in the 2020 ESPN 100, Five-Star Shooting Guard Jalen Green will announce his decision next Friday April 17. The Fresno,California product will decide between Auburn, Florida State, Memphis, Oregon, and USC. ESPN’s number two ranked player, Five-Star big man Evan Mobley signed with USC, where he will team up with his dad (assistant coach) and Isaiah (fellow big man) in Los Angeles. ESPN’s number three ranked player, Five-Star Point Guard Cade Cunningham signed with Oklahoma State.

Duke big man Vernon Carey Jr. announced his intentions to enter the 2020 NBA Draft. Carey averaged eighteen points and nine rebounds per game in his single season in Durham.

Arizona Freshman Guard Josh Green announced he was entering the 2020 NBA Draft after averaging almost twelve points and almost three assists per game in his lone season in Tucson.

Former Kentucky wing Kahlil Whitney, who withdrawed from school in January, has signed with an agent and will enter the 2020 NBA Draft.

Creighton grad transfer Davion Mintz committed to Kentucky on Friday. The Point Guard averaged ten points, three assists, and three rebounds in 2018-19.

Former Columbia Guard Mike Smith will grad transfer to Michigan. The All-Ivy League guard averaged almost twenty-three points and four and a half assists for the Lions. Smith also considered Arizona, Gonzaga, and Seton Hall before deciding on Michigan.

While this isn’t just college basketball news, the NCAA expects to vote on a one-time transfer waiver. They will discuss waiver on April 24 and take a vote on May 20. The NCAA is also expected to make steps regarding student athletes being able to profit off of their name, image, and likeness.

UNC Forward Brooks to return for senior season (CBB News)

First, for all of you Arkansas fans out there (like me and I’m a North Carolina fan too), Eric Musselman was hired on April 7,2019 a year ago today. Also, I’m blogging this on April 7 not April 8 so its not a year after exactly but anyway let’s get into the college basketball news.

North Carolina Forward Garrison Brooks announced recently that he was returning for his senior season. Brooks I’m sure is hoping for a better outcome to next season than what happened during 2019-2020 for the Tar Heels. Brooks averaged almost seventeen points and eight and a half rebounds this past season. He adds some nice veteran leadership to what is going to be a talented North Carolina team next season.

Former five-star recruit and Arizona Freshman Guard Nico Mannion announced he is entering the 2020 NBA Draft. Mannion averaged fourteen points per game and five assists per game in his lone season in Tucson.

On SportsCenter on Tuesday, what usually would be the College Basketball Awards in Los Angeles, awards were given out. The Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award was awarded to Oregon’s Payton Pritchard who averaged 20.5 points per game and 5.5 assists. Seton Hall’s Myles Powell won the Jerry West Shooting Guard of Year Award by averaging 21 points per game, 4.3 rebounds per game, and 2.9 assists per game. Villanova Small Forward Saddiq Bey won the Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year by averaging 16.1 points per game, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. Dayton’s Obi Toppin received the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year by averaging 20 points per game, 7.5 rebounds per game, and 2.2 assists per game. Iowa’s Luka Garza won the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year by averaging 23.9 points per game, 9.8 rebounds per game, and 1.8 blocks per game.

Maryland Sophomore big man Jalen Smith announced he is entering the 2020 NBA Draft. He averaged 15.5 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game as a sophomore.

Duke Freshman Guard Cassius Stanley is entering the 2020 NBA Draft. He averaged almost thirteen points per game and almost five rebounds per game in his lone season in Durham.

UCLA Junior Forward Chris Smith announced he was entering the 2020 NBA Draft. During his third season in Los Angeles he averaged thirteen points per game and five and a half rebounds per game.

What my 2020 NCAA Tournament picks would’ve looked like

Based off of ESPN’s Joe Lunardi’s final bracketology, I’m going to talk about what all of my 2020 NCAA Tournament bracket picks would’ve looked like.

Round of 64

Midwest Region (Indianapolis)

Omaha
1.Kansas over 16.Siena
It’s happened once before, but I don’t see this Kansas team losing the first weekend (or spoiler) until at least the Sweet 16. Maybe not even then. Kansas is loaded, and have the pieces to make a Final Four run.

9.Marquette over 8.Houston
Marquette has explosive guard Markus Howard. Houston doesn’t.

Sacramento
12.Liberty over 5.Auburn
While Auburn had good quadrant one wins, it was tough to see them lose the SEC lead down the stretch. Liberty has become one of if not the top mid major to pick to pull an upset so why not.

4.Wisconsin over 13.North Texas
Wisconsin would’ve played as the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament and rightfully so. They would breeze by North Texas.

Greensboro
11.East Tennessee State over 6.Iowa
Despite All-American big man Luka Garza, East Tennessee State has shown that they are of the elite in mid major college basketball. They pick up a round of sixty-four win here.

3.Duke over 14.Belmont
With Duke playing basically at home, its tough not to pick them to get out of the first weekend.

St. Louis
10.Arizona State over 7.Providence
Arizona State Head Coach Bobby Hurley is an excellent coach and I think that’s why the Sun Devils move on the Round of 32.

2.Kentucky over 15.North Dakota State
After meeting Duke in the Round of 64 a year ago, North Dakota State has no easier task in this one. Kentucky wins by twenty.

East Region (New York)

Cleveland
1.Dayton over 16.Boston University
After defeating Robert Morris in the first four, Dayton blows by them in the Round of 64.

8.Colorado over 9.Florida
Florida was some people’s pre-season number one, and there season ends surprisingly, here.

Greensboro
12.Texas over 5.Butler
After getting past fellow twelve seed Richmond, the ‘Horns pull of a shocker in Greensboro.

4.Maryland over 13.Akron
At times, Maryland played like a top seed. At times they played like a four seed. I have Maryland winning and winning big over the Zips.

Albany
11.UCLA over 6.Penn State
After defeating fellow 11.NC State, UCLA pulls off another shocker.

3.Villanova over 14.Hofstra
Villanova rolls by Hofstra.

Tampa
7.West Virginia over 10.Utah State
Despite struggling at times, West Virginia struggles to a win.

2.Florida State over 15.Northern Kentucky
This might be Leonard Hamilton’s best team at Florida State. Enough said.

West Region (Los Angeles)

Spokane
1.Gonzaga over 16.NC Central
After defeating Prairie View A&M in the first four, Gonzaga defeats NC Central in a snoozefest.

8.LSU over 9.Oklahoma
Despite struggles, LSU’s offense is electric, and that should get them to a win over the Sooners.

Spokane
5.Michigan over 12.Yale
A potential upset pick here, Michigan would not lose this first round game.

13.New Mexico State over 4.Oregon
This is the only upset pick I would make, that I wouldn’t be confident about. But you always have to pick one that you’re unsure about.

Albany
6.BYU over 11.Indiana
Two teams that could score in bunches. BYU scores more.

3.Seton Hall over 14.Eastern Washington
Led by All American Myles Powell, Seton Hall rolls past EWU.

Sacramento
10.Texas Tech over 7.Arizona
In a 50/50 game, Chris Beard’s team is always my pick to win it.

2.San Diego State over 15.UC-Irvine
San Diego State might’ve slowed down to end the season but that might have been a blessing in disguise.

South Region (Houston)

Omaha
1.Baylor over 16.Winthrop
Baylor rolls over Winthrop, dominating the rebounding battle and the game.

8.Saint Mary’s over 9.Rutgers
If Saint Mary’s can beat Gonzaga, I think they can beat Rutgers too.

Tampa
5.Ohio State over 12.Stephen F. Austin
Ohio State is a team that is on and off and on and off, but they are extremely talented. They become the second five seed in my bracket to move to the Round of 32.

4.Louisville over 13.Vermont
Louisville struggled like Ohio State at some points this season, but a win over Vermont seems inevitable here.

Cleveland
6.Virginia over 11.Cincinnati
Virginia has Tony Bennett coaching them, Cincinnati does not.

3.Michigan State over 14.Bradley
Michigan State wins setting up a fun match up between two future hall of fame coaches.

St. Louis
10.USC over 7.Illinois
Onyeka Okongwu and Isaiah Mobley dominate the paint for USC en route to an NCAA Tournament victory.

2.Creighton over 15.Little Rock
I didn’t watch much of Creighton this season but they’re at least winning this game.

Round of 32

Midwest Region (Indianapolis)

Omaha
1.Kansas over 9.Marquette
A tempting upset pick, but Kansas like I said earlier has guys that can lock All-American Markus Howard up, so Kansas moves on to the second weekend.

Sacramento
4.Wisconsin over 12.Liberty
A hot Wisconsin team runs into the Liberty Flames. Wisconsin dominates this game.

Greensboro
3.Duke over 11.East Tennessee State
Both Cinderellas in the Midwest Region end here. Duke is too talented of a team and Mike Kyrzewski is too dominant as a coach.

St. Louis
2.Kentucky over 10.Arizona State
A fun game between Kentucky and Arizona State results in a Kentucky ten point win.

East Region (New York)

Cleveland
1.Dayton over 8.Colorado
Led by player of the year Obi Toppin, Dayton rolls by Colorado.

Greensboro
4.Maryland over 12.Texas
Maryland dominates Texas on the interior, setting up a Sweet 16 match up in Madison Square Garden with top seed Dayton.

Albany
11.UCLA over 3.Villanova
This is not the team that would’ve won a third national championship in five seasons for Jay Wright. UCLA moves on to the second weekend.

Tampa
2.Florida State over 7.West Virginia
Florida State rolls by a struggling West Virginia team.

West Region (Los Angeles)

Spokane
8.LSU over 1.Gonzaga
Gonzaga loses in the weekend number one to high scoring LSU.

Spokane
5.Michigan over 13.New Mexico State
Michigan’s offense would have a field day against the Aggies.

Albany
6.BYU over 3.Seton Hall
Seton Hall has fallen! Led by one of the most efficient offenses in the country, BYU rolls to the second weekend with a ten point win.

Sacramento
10.Texas Tech over 2.San Diego State
And another top three seed falls. Texas Tech moves on.

South Region (Houston)

Omaha
1.Baylor over 8.Saint Mary’s
Baylor’s defense gets them a win that maybe they shouldn’t have gotten.

Tampa
5.Ohio State over 4.Louisville
Ohio State sends Louisville packing on a buzzer-beater.

Cleveland
3.Michigan State over 6.Virginia
The best two games of the first weekend of the tournament are both here in the south region (the one above and this one). Michigan State gets a win in overtime.

St. Louis
10.USC over 2.Creighton
Again, the big men step up for USC and send them to Houston and the second weekend of the tournament.

Sweet 16

Midwest Region (Indianapolis)

Indianapolis
1.Kansas over 4.Wisconsin
Kansas wins on a late three from guard Isaiah Moss.

Indianapolis
3.Duke over 2.Kentucky
Duke wins in the best game of the weekend by just two points.

East Region (New York)

New York
4.Maryland over 1.Dayton
Led by their big man play, Maryland neutralizes All American Obi Toppin and moves to the regional final.

New York
2.Florida State over 11.UCLA
Florida State moves to the East Regional Final with a fifteen point, dominant win.

West Region (Los Angeles)

Los Angeles
5.Michigan over 8.LSU
Michigan’s high powered offense leads Michigan to the Elite 8.

Los Angeles
6.BYU over 10.Texas Tech
BYU denies Texas Tech a chance at their second straight Elite 8 let alone a second straight Final Four appearance.

South Region (Houston)

Houston
5.Ohio State over 1.Baylor
Baylor falls to Ohio State team because of the dominance rebounding the ball for Ohio State.

Houston
3.Michigan State over 10.USC
USC’s run ends at the hands of Cassius Winston and the Spartans.

Elite 8

Midwest Region (Indianapolis)

Indianapolis
1.Kansas over 3.Duke
Kansas becomes the lone one seed into the Elite 8 and the only one into the Final Four.

East Region (New York)

New York
2.Florida State over 4.Maryland
Leonard Hamilton’s team runs through Maryland to get to the Final Four.

West Region (Los Angeles)

Los Angeles
6.BYU over 5.Michigan
Two high powered offenses collide. BYU wins in a hard fought overtime game.

South Region (Houston)

Houston
3.Michigan State over 5.Ohio State
In a Big Ten match up, Michigan State rolls to the Final Four.

Final Four

Atlanta
1.Kansas over 2.Florida State
Kansas shows why they are one of the best teams in the country with a low scoring win over Florida State.

Atlanta
3.Michigan State over 6.BYU
Cassius Winston is not going out now. Winston leads the Spartans to a national championship berth.

National Championship

Atlanta
3.Michigan State over 1.Kansas
The pre-season number one team defeats the overall number one seed in an excellent farewell game by Michigan State’s Cassius Winston.

National Champion:Michigan State
